Unit/Project Background
Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Head, Private Sector Engagement, the intern will assist the Resource Mobilization’s Private Sector Engagement Team. A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. This internship will be for up to six months.

UN Women Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Strategic Partnerships Division (SPD) is responsible for proactively driving the positioning of UN Women so that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. A service centre to UN Women HQ Divisions and Field Offices, SPD is organized into functional clusters, comprising: Resource Mobilization (RM) (including Liaison Offices) and Communications and Advocacy. Given the scope and inter-relationships of SPD’s functional responsibilities, the work of SPD is highly synergistic, involving constant and direct interaction and information-sharing among team members, to provide high quality advice, services and support to UN Women.

 

Within the Strategic Partnerships Division, the Resource Mobilization branch, Private Sector Engagement Team:

  • Provides service, support and strategic advice internally and externally to generate high value, high impact investments and partnerships to support our mandate.  To carry out this work, we maintain and share comprehensive information on UN Women’s work and how to engage with the private sector and support global.
  • Identifies, manages and grows dynamic partnerships through fundraising, shared value initiatives and cause marketing with corporations, foundations and individuals, to impact Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment through their own companies and through UN Women’s direct work around the world. 
  • Coordinates the many agency wide touch points and leaders working with the private sector to ensure a one UN Women approach to partnerships engagement.
  • Conducts analysis, forecasting and synthesizing to enhance decision-making on partnerships, donor visibility and interaction, as well as knowledge management and sharing.

This is an opportunity for two interns to work in the Private Sector Engagement in the Resource Mobilization Branch of the Strategic Partnerships Division at UN Women headquarters in New York. This internship provides an opportunity to engage with and develop knowledge resources and tools to aid in UN Women’s resource mobilization efforts. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Learning Objectives:

  • By the end of the internship the interns should have a good working knowledge of the fundraising landscape with the private sector with UN Women as well as a clear understanding of the relationship building with partners and clients.
  • At the end of the internship interns should have a better understanding of the complex functions and dynamics of an international organization working in the development sector, and its impact in the UN System as well as at the national and regional levels.
  • The intern should leave with better technical knowledge of the creation and design of products for both internal and external distribution.
  • The intern should understand the complexities and efficiencies of scheduling global meetings, and compiling input from a global, de-centralized workforce.
  • The interns should leave with an improved understanding of gender equality and women’s empowerment and how UN Women’s work is changing global perspectives about these areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop partners brief on companies which include their ESG (Economic, Social, Governance), CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and Brand & Business Priorities and support the cultivation and evolution of partnership plans.  Update donor intelligence for existing and future partner to UN Women to include relevant new developments.
  • Assist the team with the development of compelling materials and collateral (i.e.concept notes, reports, presentations, marketing materials, articles, etc.) Support the creation of new materials on partnership impact, partner intelligence, partnership announcements, donor visibility and funding projections and trends.
  • Help develop best practices tools on how to engage with the private sector through the compiling of case studies and the sharing of trends on impactful cause marketing and shared value amongst others.
  • Support the team in uploading documents on the UN Women intranet, preparing inputs for uploading to the internet and relevant briefing materials, updating the database of private sector counterparts, fielding due diligence information requests and outreach to include drafting correspondence, scheduling meetings, event coordination and summarizing notes.
  • Assist in logistical and operational support and provide other assistance as identified during the internship period.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Interns must have studied marketing, PR, business intelligence, business/management, international relationships or another similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

 

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required. Working knowledge of French, or Spanish desired.

 

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

 

Application Information:

  • Two internship positions are on offer, initially for a three-month period with the possibility of extension for a further three-month period.
  • UN Women will only be able to respond to those applications in which there is further interest.
  • Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrollment, passport, and visa (if applicable).

 

UN Women Internship Policy:

  1. Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
    1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
    3. Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of the graduation date.
  2. UN Women’s internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  3. All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  4. UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  5. The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  6. Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of the internship; and
  7. The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and the internship application.
