Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP works through 136 country offices to provide development advocacy, advice and assistance to 166 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Arab States, Eastern Europe, CIS, Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Effectiveness Group in the Policy and Programme Support (EG/BPPS) focuses on assisting UNDP and partners to achieve higher quality development results through an integrated approach that links results-based management and performance monitoring with more effective and new ways of working. It seeks to do so by enabling UNDP and others to be more innovative, and to make more evidence and data driven decisions by identifying, testing, sharing, learning from and institutionalizing what works. It acts as a hub on all aspects of results-based management, development performance monitoring and analysis, as well as identifying, collecting, and sharing ideas on new and better ways of working across the UNDP network, social innovators, and the development community. The intern will be working with the Development Results and Performance Analysis Team (Results Team) of EG/BPPS. The Intern will work closely with the EG Results Team, Regional Bureaux, Central Bureaux and Information and Technology Management (IMT) team. He/she will report to the Team Leader of the Results Team.

UNDP does not pay for internships. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

Duties and Responsibilities

The selected candidate will assist the Results Team with the following duties:

Support the implementation of transparency initiatives in UNDP and contribute to UNDP’s International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) data publication
Support project and financial data analysis and contribute to data quality improvements in UNDP
Contribute to data visualization on open.undp.org

Contribution to the development of machine learning algorithms in automating narrative analysis.

Knowledge of methodologies, tools, systems and apply practical experience in planning, monitoring, evaluating and reporting and ability to apply to practical situations;
Skilled working with data entry, analysis and clean up
Experience working with data visualization tools (for example, Microsoft Power BI or Tableau) a plus;
Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task;
Attention to detail is crucial;
Ability to work independently;
Responsible, responsive and enthusiastic.

Required Skills and Experience

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
Please note that this is an Unpaid internship.

The studies should be in development, social sciences, statistics, economics, business administration or similar.
