Background

The Regional Service Centre is structured around several thematic areas or Clusters respectively dealing with Inclusive Growth and sustainable development; Governance and peacebuilding; Climate change and resilience; HIV, health and development; Gender; Development impact communications, partnerships and resource mobilization. 

Under the Cluster Leader, the Governance and Peacebuilding Team develops knowledge products, provides policy advice and country office and regional programme support in the following areas: Conflict prevention and peacebuilding; Inclusive political processes and elections; Enhancing voice and participation, responsive and accountable institutions and anti-corruption; Human rights; Rule of law, justice and security. The Intern will report to the Cluster Leader for Governance and Peacebuilding. The Intern’s focus will be with the Governance and Peacebuilding Team. The volunteer will provide programmatic support to areas of programming which have relevance for peace and security, including conflict prevention and peacebuilding, prevention of violent extremism. The Intern will provide support to programmatic engagements on the Lake Chad Stabilisation Strategy. The Intern will also be expected to mainstream human rights, gender and disability rights into the work implemented by the Centre and UNDP Country Offices. The Intern will be working with UNDP Country Offices in Sub-Saharan Africa and at the regional level including with the African Union and Regional Economic Commissions such as ECOWAS, ECCAS and IGAD. The Intern will particularly contribute towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) in Africa.

Duties and Responsibilities

Main responsibilities:

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of UNDP’s Governance and Peacebuilding Cluster Lead the Intern will:

  • Coordinate regional meetings, training and learning activities;
  • Assist managing UNDP’s work on Lake Chad including priority interventions pertaining to the Regional Stabilisation Strategy (RSS);
  • Assist supporting UNDP engagement both regionally and at the country office level in support of UNDP’s Regional Programme for Africa engagement on Governance and Peacebuilding;
  • Contribute to UNDP’s partnership with the African Union and Regional Economic Communities;
  • Contribute to ad-hoc writing and administrative tasks as requested by the supervisor;
  • Conduct preparation documents and research for project proposals to be developed within the Programme with a focus on achieving the Outcomes set in the Regional Programme;
  • Support in monitoring UNDP-assisted activities within the ongoing projects in the Regional Programme, writing and editing support of the projects and programme monitoring and evaluation;
  • Communication support and support to project activities in communication where needed (brochures, success stories, pictures, videos, social media communication etc.);
  • Administrative support and recording of all substantive matters in the programme on an as-needed basis;
  • Other relevant tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Results/expected outputs:

As an active UNDP team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including: 

  • Coordinate workshops and other events effectively;
  • Liaise and collaborate efficiently with a wide range of UNDP Country Offices and other stakeholders across Africa, especially on Governance, peacebuilding and rule of law issues;
  • Understand the basics of project development within UNDP, with particular reference to the principles of human-rights based approach and results-based management;
  • Write high quality briefing notes and concept papers on thematic areas related to Governance and Peacebuilding;
  • Provide support to the Team in Addis and Lake Chad Basin working on implementation of the RSS;
  • Manage her/his own work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment;
  • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree social sciences, international relations, political science, development studies, conflict studies or other related domain; or
  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or
  • Have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a master’s degree or equivalent studies.

Experience and Skills:

  • Experience working in the region is a strong advantage;
  • Previous experience undertaking community service, volunteering or/and interning is desirable;
  • Strong drafting and oral presentation skills for document plans, proposals, mails, briefings, reports and speeches in French for a diverse audience (United Nations System, Government, donors, OSC, traditional authorities);
  • Strong computer skills.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English and French languages.

Intern requiements:

  • Applicants should indicate which months they are available part and/or full time and when they complete their studies;
  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • The Intern is expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for his/her education programme;
  • The intern will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation etc.;
