Background

1. BACKGROUND

The Objectives of the project are the environmentally safe disposal of POPs (1200 tons of pesticide POPs and 300 tons of PCBs) enhancing at the same time management capacities and disposal of POPs in Pakistan. Although the project could not likely dispose all the pesticide POPs and PCBs existing in Pakistan (also because the exact quantification of these stockpiles is a continuous process which will continue even after project closure) by establishing a proper regulatory and monitoring system and enhancing the disposal capability of the country, the project will ensure that further POPs stockpiles can be effectively and safely disposed by the country as soon as they are identified. The project intends to achieve this objective improving the regulatory system, enhancing its enforcement, raising awareness on POPs, and by establishing the capacity for POPs monitoring, handling, transport and disposal.
