Background

The Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) for Europe and Community of Independent States Region (ECIS) is UNDP’s main knowledge and advisory hub for ECIS. It aims to connect the region to a global network of development experts, to build knowledge and capacity, and to forge partnerships to meet the development challenges of a large and diverse region. IRH also aims to capture and spread development successes and best practices in the region and to improve the impact of UNDP’s work through effective communications and advocacy.

In particular, the Intern will provide support to the regional component of the following GEF funded full-size projects implemented by UNDP IRH in close cooperation with the MPU/Chemicals team of UNDP:

  • The regional component of the “Reducing UPOPs and Mercury Releases from the Health Sector in Africa” (GEF/MedWaste Africa): The overall objective of this full size GEF funded project, implemented by UNDP in partnership with WHO and the NGO Health Care Without Harm, is to implement best environmental practices and introduce non-incineration healthcare waste treatment technologies and mercury-free medical devices in four Sub-Saharan African countries (Ghana, Madagascar, Tanzania and Zambia) to reduce harmful releases from the health sector.

Duties and Responsibilities

The purpose of this internship is to provide an opportunity for graduate level degree students, where their educational experience can be enhanced through practical work and they can get familiar with administrative and operations processes. The intern will be an integrated member of the GEF/MedWaste Africa regional project team and will support the regional project team in their technical, management and communication activities, through the following tasks:

  • Provide support on the implementation of the knowledge management strategy of the project;
  • Strengthen relevant information management tools for data collection, analysis and visualization to facilitate monitoring, reporting and decision-making in line with the project needs;
  • Provide support on the deployment and/or management of the project website;
  • Support project’s external communication
  • Facilitate internal communication among national project teams and project partners through online/mobile platforms and support the organization of webinars and national/regional calls;
  • Support the organization of regional and/or national workshops.

The intern will develop a good overview of healthcare waste management, chemicals management in healthcare sector within a development context as well as international conventions such as Stockholm Convention on POPs and Minamata Convention on Mercury. Intern will also obtain a practical experience in project specific knowledge management activities as well as UNDP’s project management concept, and administrative procedures. Tasks and responsibilities may be adjusted according to skills and preferences of selected candidate.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 
Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: 

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); 
  • Have graduated with a university degree in relevant fields such as Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Communication, Social Sciences, ICT or other related fields, and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Previous related work experience in a national or an international entity would be an asset but is not required.
  • Experience in developing websites/programming or using social media channels is an asset.
  • Experience using online and other data collection tools such as KoboToolBox, ODK, or similar is an asset;
  • Knowledge of quantitative data analysis, strong Excel skills and data visualization using graphic and mapping software like PowerBI, Tableau, QGIS and ArcGIS is an asset.

Language skills: 

  • Written and spoken proficiency in English;
  • Fluency in Turkish and French is an asset, but not required.


Financial Issues:
Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions the applicant must get familiar with prior to signing his/her internship agreement.

The costs associated with the internship must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.

Conditions:

  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents, illness or death during the internship;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Interns are responsible to arrange for their own visa and residence documents, and need to plan for these well in advance;
  • The purpose of the internship is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies; therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship;
