Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) covers 17 countries in the Arab States region and provides direct support to UN Women Country Offices in Egypt, Iraq, the State of Palestine, Jordan and the Morocco Multicounty Office (MCO) covering Morocco and Algeria. In addition, UN Women has a programme presence in Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, Kuwait and Bahrain.

ROAS supports Country Offices to assist national governments to fulfill their gender equality commitments under the applicable national and international laws, and in furtherance of national and regional implementation of Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Coordination is a critical component of UN Women’s triple mandate (coordination, normative and operational). UN Women works with regional-level entities of the United Nations, including the UN Sustainable Development Group, to leverage institutional mandates, partnerships and networks for the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment across all UN operations. In the Arab States region, this includes co-chairing the Regional Gender Theme Group, support to UNSDCF elaboration and promotion of the UNSG’s Gender Parity Strategy.

UN Women Regional Office for Arab States in Cairo requires an intern to support the coordination activities included in the ROAS Annual Work Plan. The intern will be part of the UN Women Regional Office team in Cairo and will work under the direct supervision of the Coordination Specialist.
