Antecedentes

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.


Under the overall guidance and direction of the Country Representative, the Communications Officer leads the implementation of the UN Women corporate communications strategy, as well as the development, management and implementation of the Country communications and  advocacy strategies which are geared towards awareness raising of gender equality and the empowerment of women, promote public and media outreach, and increase the visibility of key programmatic results, and UN Women global campaign initiatives in Kenya.

She/he works in close collaboration with the country programme and operations team, UN Women HQ Communications Team and UN Women ESAR Regional Communications focal point, UN Communications Group in Kenya, media and journalists ensuring successful UN Women communications strategy implementation.

Deberes y responsabilidades

 

In the first month of the assignment a workplan will be developed that will cover the following responsibilities:

Plan and design internal and external strategies for communication and outreach

  • Carry out communications needs assessments for UN Women Kenya Office (projects, country programme and corporate change initiatives/campaigns, etc.);
  • Advise programme teams on how to include communication and outreach initiatives in their programme proposals and programme implementation;
  • Develop advocacy and visibility plan and branding guidelines for content publications.

Develop advocacy and communication content for the office

  • Develop communication and advocacy instruments for the Country Office, including monthly donor bulleting, brochure for new Country Programme and updated leaflets for programmes and projects;
  • Organize visibility and communication initiatives with external partners;
  • Oversee the production of materials, draft success story articles and ensure all materials meet the corporate policies, norms and standards for publishing, design;
  • Provide recommendations on both general and emerging issues related to the Communications and Visibility Component of the programme in line with UN Women Corporate Communication policy;
  • Provide guidance and advice on content documentation and monitoring and evaluation of content.

Develop online content, including for website, intranet, knowledge system and social media

  • Generate, prepare and edit content for websites and social media, print and TV;
  • Document sequential programme implementation from inception to programme closure through video and print success story telling.

Manage the implementation of specific flagship events and campaigns

  • Add specific events planned for the next 6 months here.

Develop materials for outreach

  • Disseminate communication materials through contact database;
  • Develop and disseminate newsletters to key stakeholders;
  • Respond to inquiries from public and interested stakeholders;
  • Produce audio-visual materials and sound recordings for radio broadcast.

Deliverables:

  • Needs assessment completed;
  • Advocacy and visibility plan for 2019 developed for the office;
  • Inputs to programme documents provided in a timely manner;
  • Offline and Online content developed based on workplan that will be developed in the first month of assignment;
  • Technical support to flagship events and campaigns as agreed in workplan;
  • Timely dissemination of information to contact database.

Habilidades y experiencia requeridas

Education:

Bachelor's degree in media/communication studies, journalism, public relations or other related social sciences

 At least 4 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy, preferably in gender issues.

  • Knowledge and experience in UN Women Practice Areas 
  • Experience in implementing communication and publication strategies
  • Experience with social media and web development
  • Experience with Adobe and video development
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills

  • Fluency in English and Swahili both in speaking and writing
