Background

Overview

This intern position will be hosted within the UNFPA Serbia Country Office in Belgrade, Serbia. Under the overall supervision of the Assistant Representative/SRH and Youth Programme Analyst, the intern will support the country office in everyday tasks in regards to sexual and reproductive health, young people, human rights and gender equality, demographic trends and humanitarian respond Programme support activities. The intern will provide daily support to the unit in different areas and assist team members in fulfilling set of programmes outcomes. A Workplan with outcomes and achievements for the duration of the Internship will be agreed upon. Regular meetings with Intern, discussing processes and work-related outcomes will be required.

UNFPA through its mandated is supporting government which is fully committed to the implementation of the Agenda 2030. Youth participation in achieving the SDGs was recognised as very important, so the recommendation was that the youth in Serbia be involved, through the activities of their organisations and associations.Of the total of 169 sustainable development targets, 65 directly refer to the youth. It was also stressed that it is of great importance that the society in which the youth live supports to the greatest extent possible the full development of their potential. For young people in Serbia, sustainable development agenda should be seen as a roadmap for changing the way everyone live, the ways we value each other, the ways we learn, consume and grow. 

Through non paid internship, CO will provide an opportunity for young people to develop and strengthen their skills in national and international environment, to be empowered to become agent of change. By the end of the internship the candidate will have an increased understanding of the UN system, be empowered to address interventions to engage young people and enhance their skills in all areas of UNFPA programming.

Duties and Responsibilities

Programme Support:

  • Support Country Office in supporting thematic components (SRH, Gender empowerment, youth empowerment and emergency context ); 
  • Attend workshops and training sessions on different topics organized in Belgrade; 
  • Reviewing and proofreading the documents that is written by the CO in regards to everyday work;
  • Assist in general research and gathering information to support the CO for ongoing activities;
  • Assist in collecting, registering and maintaining information on program activities by reviewing quarterly and annual reports from partners;
  • Assist in organizing logistics and communication in relation to events and seminars; 
  • Assist in other related duties as required, including administrative tasks and joint activities with the UN agencies;
  • Support the creation of advocacy and communication tools articles, databases etc.) for increasing visibility of UNFPA mandate.

Capacity development/administrative support: 

  • Ensure provision of effective communications support to the office and assist in the provision of information on benefits/entitlements to the RO;
  • Assist in maintaining electronic and hard copy filing system;
  • Participate in the CO ongoing projects implementation and perform other relevant duties as may be assigned by the supervisor. Assist in the preparation of public information material related to the ongoing projects and final reporting document; 
  • Learn/ Understand the structure, mechanisms, policies and practice areas of UNFPA;
  • Any other duties as required in terms of the assignment in question.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Active enrollment in or completion of a degree university programme in Social Science studies; 
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English and Serbian is mandatory;
  • Relevant English language certificates would be an asset;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (MS Word, Excel and Outlook) software applications;
  • Interest in the field of health as a way of development;
  • Ability to adapt to new environments and to establish and maintain good working relations with individual of different cultural backgrounds;
  • Results oriented and conscientious;
  • Excellent listening skills and empathy, ability to write clearly and concisely;
  • Excellent collaborative and team working capability;
  • Demonstrate the ability to build and sustain effective working relationships with staff at all levels in the organization;
  • Integrity: exercising the appropriate discretion when working with confidential and sensitive matters and information.

Financial Aspects 

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins;
