Background

UN Women being one of the the 11 UNAIDS co-sponsored of the Unified Budget, Results and Accountability Framework (UBRAF) funding working in collaboration with UNAIDS and other UN Agencies to improve the lives of women and girls.  With the UBRAF funding UN Women Ethiopia country office, in its health program is working to strengthen capacity development and implementation of gender sensitive HIV prevention, care, treatment and access to reproductive health services through supporting GEWE.

UN Women has conducted assessment in Gambella regional state in 2018 on access of HIV and SRH related service to women and Girls – A gap and need assessment in Gender responsive HIV programing. The assessment has revealed that, women and girls are especially affected by social and gender-based constraints that have negative consequences to the health and empowerment of women and girls in Gambella. Among the negative effects are limited access of women to household property and economy, women are generally the major contributors of the house hold economy but are the less to benefit from it without the husband’s permission to do so. This will limit the access of women and girls to HIV and RH related services. For example, most women in Gambella, especially those living in the rural areas have limited access to services like FP, ANC follow up, HIV testing and to participate in any community gathering without the permission of their husband.  This problem is more prevalent and highly affects women living with HIV.
