UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Ending Violence against Women (EVAW) section is part of the Policy Division at UN Women Headquarters in New York.  The section is responsible for a number of functions including policy and technical advice to regional and country offices on EVAW, supporting the normative work on EVAW at the global level and developing and managing global level programmes.

The Spotlight Initiative is a global partnership between the UN and the EU to eliminate all forms of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). It was launched on 20 September 2017 at a high-level event during the 72nd UN General Assembly. Capitalized by an initial commitment of €500 million from the EU, the Initiative is a visible political and financial investment in multilateralism. The Spotlight Initiative is a way for the United Nations and European Union to support a comprehensive approach to preventing and respond into VAWG in target countries and do so in innovative and new ways.

The UN Women EVAW section is seeking an intern to support in data automation and visualization of monitoring and reporting tools, such as global and regional dashboards for the UN Women components of the Spotlight Initiative.


Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

Reporting to the Policy Specialist the intern will support the automation of EVAW monitoring tools and improving the design and visualization of information.

This will include the following key tasks:

  • Review existing EVAW monitoring tools, including the global and regional dashboards, and provide suggestions on how to improve these through data automation.
  • Support the development of new data automation systems so that the dashboards and other monitoring tools rely less on manual input and configuration.
  • Provide suggestion and ideas for any new tools which could be used for monitoring purposes and support the development of these.
  • Support the improvement of data visualization of the information extracted by new and existing monitoring tools so that the information is presented in a visually appealing and concise manner to strengthen the monitoring of UN Women components of the Spotlight Initiative and other global programmes.
  • Provide support to other data visualization and data management needs to enhance programme visibility.
  • Compile existing materials for a user-friendly presentation/set of presentations on the planning and implementation of violence against women prevalence surveys.

  • Gain insight on strategies and approaches for Ending Violence against Women (EVAW) and UN Women’s role and mandate in this regard.
  • Gain experience and understanding of the work of the UN system and UN Women.
  • Understand the linkages and importance between data, data visualization, data management and development work.

Functional Competencies:

  • Experience with at least one front-end data visualization software
  • Must possess knowledge of at least one programming language and/or experience utilizing statistical software (JMP, SAS, Minitab, SPSS or other)
  • Must be able to analyize and systematize qualitative and quantitative data
  • Experience in design software is an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of MS office applications and in particular excel.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Team player with strong inter-personnel skills
  • Knowledge of or prior experience working on advancing gender equality or ending violence against women is an asse

Required Skills and Experience


  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: programming, data management, data visualization, statistics or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation, or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.


  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.


Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
