Background

UNDP - Sri Lanka, in partnership with World Food Programme - Sri Lanka, and Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment jointly implements the Climate Change Adaptation project “Addressing Climate Change Impacts on Marginalized Agricultural Communities Living in the Mahaweli River Basin of Sri Lanka” (C-CAP II) funded by the Adaptation Fund since October 2017.

As a part of project activity, it is expected to generate knowledge and a series of scientific data that needs to be captured, store and analyze for effective knowledge management of the project. Since the project is in its last year of implementation, knowledge management is found to be critical in terms of creation of new knowledge, capturing best practices, sharing lessons learned and raising the visibility of the project, etc.

As such, under the guidance and direct supervision of the Technical Coordinator of CCAP Project, the Intern required to support knowledge management aspects of the project ensuring high quality, accuracy, and consistency of work. The communication Intern promotes a client-oriented approach consistent with UNDP rules and regulations.

The communication Intern has to work in close collaboration with the Operations and Programme staff of UNDP. WFP and MMDE to exchange information and ensure consistent and effective service delivery.
 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducting research in the project locations(Polonnaruwa & Walapane) to support case studies and policy briefs.
  • Assistance for planning, design, and implementation of the learning and Knowledge Sharing aspect of the Project.
  • Creating project workspaces for documents and database management.
  • Capture the activities dedicated to best practices and lessons learned, and raising the visibility of the project – both internally and externally.
  • Assistance to disseminate project results within and beyond the project intervention zone through existing information-sharing networks and forums.
  • Closely collaborate with Project Specialist WFP, UNDP, and MMDE Communication teams.
  • Work proactively with external project partners, UNDP consultants/agencies to identify opportunities for capturing and sharing knowledge, and disseminating information about progress and results.
  • Identify media stories, and write stories/case studies.
  • Data survey and assistance to develop policy briefs.
  • Assistance to produce video documentary as necessary for capturing project results.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
    • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
  • Degree in Development Studies, Social Sciences, Natural Resources, Business Administration or any other related field;
  • Qualifications and experience in conducting research;
  • Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office packages;
  • Experience working in cross-cultural environments and assets;
  • Good interpersonal skills.

Please note that candidates must be comfortable with travel to the project locations; Lankapura, and Medirigiriya in Polonnaruwa, and Walapane in Nuwara Eliya.
