Background

The SDG Innovative Enterprises Challenge is a joint initiative by the Government of Eswatini, private sector and civil society, with technical and financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The initiative supports young action leaders creating meaningful progress towards achieving the SDGs through sustainable and smart business solutions. The project provides a platform for the development of innovative solutions to address development challenges faced by the country as well as the implementation of SDGs. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (MICT) through the Royal Science and Technology Park. The Royal Science and Technology Park (RSTP) is a public enterprise (PE) established in terms of the Royal Science and Technology Park Act No. 5 of 2012. The Business Incubator of the Royal Science and Technology Park (RSTP) nurtures innovative start-ups so that they survive and grow through the difficult and vulnerable early stages of development and become bankable projects. Business incubation contributes to the removal of barriers to entrepreneurship, innovation and market access.

Objectives of the Assignment:

  • Development of Training Content on Entrepreneurship and Business Planning.
  • Delivery of an Interactive Training Workshop on Entrepreneurship and Business Planning for people living with disabilities.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical specifications

  1. Training method
  • The training method should combine power point presentations, case studies and exercises. It should be delivered face-to-face to the participants. A flip board will also be provided.
  • The Trainer must engage participants in actual delivery of sections of the training.
  • The Trainer must provide examples or known cases to ensure that participants grasp the content.
  • The training material should be in English. It should not be in ‘MBA’ jargon but not so simplistic to lose application in the real world of business.
  • The Trainer will be responsible for developing and delivering all of the training content.

2. Training content

  • The Trainer shall develop training content. The Trainer will submit all the training content including PowerPoint slides, case study information and exercises. It is mandatory for the Trainer to deliver the content on the specified date because all of the material will be evaluated by RSTP and printed before the training workshop.

3. Training Workshops

  • The Trainer will deliver a training on Entrepreneurship and Business Planning for 1.5 days. The workshops will start at 8:30 am and end at 16:30 pm on the first day, and at 13:00 on the last day. The Trainer will deliver the training to 40 participants for people living with disabilities. The training content should cover all the following topics. Omissions or inadequate explanation will not be tolerated and will affect the amount to be paid for the services.

Part 1: Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Business Planning

  • Behaviour, traits and psychology of an entrepreneur  - If you are not born with any of these what can you do?;
  • Overview on business planning and uses;
  • Funding a start-up from conception to subsequent stages of the development cycle;

Part 2: Signs of viable business idea

  • Ideation benefits and process;
  • Prototype of the product or service;
  • Business canvas;

Part 3: Market research information supporting the business idea

  • Business and market information gathering tools
  • Market size and value
    • What is a market?
    • How do you measure the size / value of a potential market?
    • Customer profiling and decision-making trends
  • Evidence of need for the business
    • What methods and tools can you use to assess if there is or will be demand for your product / service?
    • What kind of information (facts) is required to demonstrate that there is need for the business and/or there is acceptability of the product or service?
  • Knowing the competition
    • Identifying direct and indirect competitors
    • Identifying competitors’ advantages and disadvantages, their envisaged investments and most likely move in response to the entry of your business and mitigation measures
    • What regulations do competitors face and how will this affect your operations, costs and product design or quality?

Part 4: Market entry techniques and plan for 3-5 years

  • Pre-Launch pilot and sales
  • Branding techniques
  • Marketing and product promotions techniques and plan
  • Sales techniques
    • Listing in stores, warehousing and distribution
    • How to guarantee availability, visibility and accessibility of products?
    • How to manage cash sales, credit sales and bad debts?

    • What is a competitive advantage and how do you develop it for your business? 4
    • How to ensure that customers switch from your direct and indirect customers and become repeat and eventually loyal customers.

Part 5: Human resources or expertise requirements for 3-5 years

  • Identifying required talent
  • Options for engaging human resources or experts especially at early stages of the business
  • Compliance / legal requirements
  • Costs and plan for 3-5 years

Part 6: Operating Plan

  • How do you decide on the minimum capacity required to make the idea a business?
  • Ideal infrastructure, facilities and equipment for product development
  • Compliance issues and costs of compliance for operating the business
  • SWOT Analysis
  • How do you use the results of the SWOT analysis in business planning?
  • Operating plan for 3-5 years and costs

Part 7: Financial Forecasts

  • Pricing structures or models (examples)
  • Laying out the start-up capital structure and amounts (example)

Deliverables

  • Development of Training Content on Entrepreneurship and Business Planning

Competencies

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills;
  • Substantive knowledge and experience in the entrepreneurial space both locally and internationally;
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the entrepreneurship and business management field;
  • Knowledge of the general development problems facing Eswatini;
  • Ability to apply principles of adult learning to training development and delivery;
  • Awareness and sensitivity in working with people of various cultural and social backgrounds;                                        

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • A minimum of a university Bachelor's degree in business management, marketing, or related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum two years experience in training adults in the related field.
  • Outline of similar or related training content delivered for adults that have business ideas or are running businesses.
  • Experience in being a lead trainer in a training workshop.

Language Requirement:

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and SiSwati.
