Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.

2020 is a vital year for UN Women and the women’s rights movement. It marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the 20th Anniversary of the UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, the 5th anniversary of the global Sustainable Development Goals, the 40th year anniversary of CEDAW, the 10th anniversary of UN Women’s establishment as the global champion for the empowerment of women and girls and the 75th Year anniversary of the UN.

In order to galvanize attention and actions on key issues from equal pay to equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work to equal participation in economic and political life and decision-making in all areas of life, UN Women is running a yearlong multi-generational campaign Generation Equality (September 2019-October 2020).
