Background

The Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will hire interns to support the administration and conduct of IEO evaluations in 2020.

The evaluations aims to strengthen UNDP accountability to global and national development partners; support the development of the next strategic plan; and support organizational learning.

The evaluations will use multiple data collection and analysis methods and will take an itirative approach to gather and analyse multiple perspectives to measure and evaluate UNDP performance and value added.  Data will be revewed and triangulated from document reviews, meta-analysis of evaluations and audits, case study missions, interviews, focus groups and surveys.

Data from UNDP results-based management system, the Integrated Results and Resource Framework and the ATLAS enterprise resouce planning system (UNDP’s financial management system) will also be taken into consideration for analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities

The interns will provide direct support to IEO’s implementation of the evaluations being planned for 2020. They will be responsible for supporting research and data collection/ analysis working directly with respective IEO evaluation managers. The interns work will be guided by IEO’s standard ICPE research and process manuals.

Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provision of general support with evaluation logistic and administration, as required by the evaluation managers;
  • Compilation of data;
  • Support to preliminary research;
  • Preparation of tables, figures and graphs for the reports;
  • Translation of documents.

Results have an impact on the overall efficiency, effectiveness and success of IEO’s work. The interns work contributes to the immediate execution of the evaluations planned, establishment of strong and reliable research base within IEO, as well as to the timely and efficient implementation of IEO’s work plan.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Undergraduate’s Degree in Social Science, Economics, Public Administration, Political Science, International Relations, or other relevant areas.

Experience

  • A minimum of 1 years of experience in conducting research;
  • Experience in the use of various research methodologies (qualitative and quantitative);
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages;
  • Prior experience with or knowledge of UNDP or other UN agencies, an advantage;
  • Knowledge of current international development issues in the areas of Environment, Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Building, an advantage.

Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of other UNDP working languages (Spanish, French, Arabic, and Russian) is an asset.
