Background

The Transformative Leadership for Gender Equality (TLGE) Training Center was launched in 2019 under a tripartite partnership between Amhara Bureau of Women, Children and Youth Affair (Amhara BoWCYA), UN Women and Bahir Dar University (BDU). The TLGE was set up with a view to create a sustainable access for capacity building and empowerment platform for aspiring and existing women leaders in Amhara Region and beyond. In addition to women leaders, the program seeks to build the transformative leadership capacity of male leaders to enhance their transformative leadership capacity so that they transform the gender relations with in the institutions they lead and fast track the achievement of a just society. Apart from serving as a capacity building hub, the program seeks to be a generator of knowledge in terms of gender equality particularly focusing on the status of women in leadership and decision making, challenges women face towards holding leadership positions and findings innovative solutions to transform mindset towards women’s leadership.

The initiative of setting up the TLGE Training center was in alignment with international, national and regional normative frameworks such as the SDGs, the GTP II and gender machineries sector plan both at federal and regional level to ensure the equal participation and effective representation of women in Ethiopia in leadership and decision-making positions.  

Currently, a series of knowledge products including training curriculum, facilitators guide and learner’s handbook which is required to kick start a comprehensive capacity building program for women leaders have been developed and piloted. The knowledge products are intended for use by lead trainers for the training center and other partners that are working to empower women in leadership as part of the broader effort to empower women in leadership. With a view to ensure the availability of a pool of trainers that can deliver training for women leaders UN Women in collaboration with Amhara BoWCYA and Bahirdar University is organizing a two round TOT. The first round of training will focus on building the technical adult training delivery capacity of trainers while the second round will focus on building the capacity of trainers on the content of the TLGE Training facilitator guide to deliver a successful training.  This TOR is therefore prepared to guide the preparation of the first round technical TOT for the TLGE Training Center. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The TLGE Training Center aspires to become a training program that delivers a powerful learning and transformative experiences for young and adult women leaders to ensure that they improve their capability, capacity, productivity and performance in leadership. In order to achieve this, it is believed that the program should have qualified trainers that can deliver the message in the training modules comprehensively and impactfully. Accordingly, the first round TOT has the objective of capacitating participants in the following areas:  

  • identify characteristics, preferences and expectations of the adult learner  
  • prepare for training and Identify trainees learning style and implications for training 
  • introduce a training session effectively 
  • Present training content effectively 
  • create and use visual aids to support training 
  • demonstrate new and effective facilitation skills, behaviors and techniques 
  • ask and answer questions appropriately 
  • follow guidelines for giving and receiving constructive feedback 
  • explain how to conclude a training session effectively 
  • manage difficult situations in the classroom

Required Skills and Experience

Experinence:

  • At least five years’ professional experience as a trainer on gender equality, transformative leadership/ leadership … etc
  • Extensive engagement as a professional in the areas of gender equality and enhancing the leadership capacity of women might be taken in lieu of the five-year training experience.
  • Substantive knowledge in the area of transformative leadership/leadership, gender equality and women’s participation in leadership.
  • Experience in working and communicating in a multicultural environment.
  • Currently working in Ethiopia or East Africa
  • Experience in delivery of adult trainings.

Language:

  • Fluency in written and oral English and Amharic is required.
  • Knowledge of other local languages is an asset.

 

FEES AND PRELIMINARY LOGISTICAL INFORMATION

Participation in the TOT is not remunerated financially. UN Women will provide logistical and financial support for travel, lodging, conference facilities and reduced DSA to cover dinner and incidentals according to UN Policy guidelines for training and travel.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants who meet the submission criteria and required experience will be considered. Applicants will be evaluated based on their technical qualifications as specified by the required experience in this Terms of Reference, their CVs, and answers provided in the written application form.
