Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) operates in 177 countries, offering global perspectives to reduce inequalities and increase sustainability, through the implementation of strategic plans. Within this challenging scenario, partnership development is a crucial aspect for the achievement of UNDP goals and the engagement of different institutions among the private and public sectors.

The UNDP office in Rome provides the opportunity to investigate and learn about the importance of Partnership creation, in order to react to global changes and adopt strategic, innovative and practical solutions.

In support of Italy’s commitment made at the G7 Environment Ministers Meeting in Bologna in June 2017, the Italian Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea (IMELS) and UNDP have signed a framework cooperation agreement. The Italian Ministry of Environment and UNDP will work on areas of common interest in development cooperation through UNDP’s Africa Centre for Climate and Sustainable Development (ACSD).

Under the leadership of the UNDP Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS), the ACSD supports information sharing on initiatives related to climate action, energy, resource efficiency and sustainable development in Africa. In addition, the ACSD supports the implementation of bilateral projects and activities between G7 and African countries.

The UNDP and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) have a global partnership to accelerate low-carbon energy transition and offer concrete steps to achieve sustainable development.  Under the cooperation, the organizations will explore joint initiatives aimed at accelerating the implementation of the Agenda 2030 and stimulating renewable energy investments in developing countries. As the primary supporter of climate action in the United Nations, UNDP provides financial and technical support to countries to design and implement Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. Throughout this work, UNDP promotes NDC approaches and implementation processes to align climate and Sustainable Development Goal targets, including on energy, into long-term national and sectoral development plans and budgets. UNDP focuses on establishing joint coordination mechanisms among actors across sectors and Ministries, prioritizing finance channelled to bold actions and integrating monitoring and reporting systems. In order to understand countries’ needs and to tailor support, UNDP will carry out scoping missions. In the capacity of the ACSD as an integrator, it will analyse and integrate the findings into comprehensive briefs to support evidence-based policy and decision-making.
