The Communications section at UN Women Headquarters in New York supports the positioning of women’s empowerment and gender equality as key issues on the international agenda and establishes UN Women’s role as the global authority in this context. This entails developing and promoting high-quality content, communicate about UN Women’s work through digital and social media and engage a global audience online.

The Communications section seeks to enlist a Social Media Consultant to support UN Women’s social media engagement on gender equality and women’s empowerment, specifically to take the lead in the planning, development and implementation of a social media strategy for UN Women’s flagship public campaign on #GenerationEquality and the Generation Equality forums in Mexico and in Paris in 2020. In addition, s/he will develop strategic partnerships including with major social media platforms and digital agencies to expand UN Women’s reach and influence. S/he will also work on monthly, quarterly and yearly analytics reports to gauge reach, engagement and other performance measures for social media posts, accounts and campaigns, helping to inform results-based decision making and drive the effective use of resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Social Media Manager, the Social Media Consultant will be responsible for the following under his/her contract:

  • Conceptualize, design and execute a social media strategy for UN Women’s flagship public campaign on #GenerationEquality and the Generation Equality forums in Mexico and in Paris.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with key constituencies, both at Headquarters and in the field, including with major social media platforms and digital creative agencies to expand UN Women’s reach and influence.
  • Develop and implement a multi-platform strategy to reach a younger audience (Gen Z and younger) and galvanize their actions in support of the #GenerationEquality campaign.
  • Take the lead on implementing UN Women’s digital and social media analytics strategy, producing monthly and yearly analytics reports. Gauge reach, engagement and other performance measures for social media posts, accounts and campaigns. Use KPIs to monitor UN Women’s impact and inform results-based decision making and drive the effective use of resources.
  • Manage UN Women’s social media accounts on a daily basis by drafting and posting messages for @UN_Women, facebook.com/unwomen, Instagram, Snapchat, and LinkedIn.
  • Manage the ED’s LinkedIn influencer page and use posts strategically for engagement.
  • Manage the DED’s Twitter account on a daily basis and producing engaging content
  • Produce and oversee the production of high-impact social media content in multiple languages, formats and/or platforms (e.g. infographic, GIFs, video, etc.), that effectively informs and engages external audiences and supports media and advocacy campaigns.
  • Undertake research to determine appropriate medium and target audience; identify and test new platforms for digital engagement.
  • Prepare production plans, write drafts, obtain clearances, finalize texts, and edit and coordinate design approval, printing procedures and distribution.
  • Update and maintain guidance notes on social media monitoring and analytics tools for field colleagues.
  • Liaises on a daily basis with other teams within the communications section and the wider organization to ensure coordinated output and editorial consistency, including attending editorial and planning meetings
  • Plan and initiate strategic and proactive outreach to influencers and partners for UN Women’s online platforms

Required Skills and Experience

  • BA Degree in Communications, Journalism, International Affairs, Writing or similar;
  • Fluent in English; fluency in Spanish and/or French a plus;
  • At least 2 years of experience in journalism, digital communications, social media, writing and editing;
  • Experience in implementing social media campaigns;
  • Experience in content production and dissemination for online audiences at the international level;
  • Experience using advanced tools for online publishing, including content management systems and social media publishing tools, such as HootSuite;
  • Experience working in sensitive and fast-moving news, communications or advocacy contexts;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Very good organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities;
  • Strong teamworking skills and ability to interact with different colleagues;
  • Familiarity with women’s rights issues;
  • Familiarity with the UN system.
