Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization with 18,000 staff working in approximately 170 offices globally. UNDP works in development and crisis settings with the aim to achieve the eradication of poverty, reduction of inequalities and exclusion, and sustained development results.

UNDP in South Sudan has committed to support the country achieve its development objectives aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals. Against the backdrop of this vision, the country office considers the wellness of staff a top priority. A health and wellness program is being designed with the aim of improving the quality of life for all the staff by providing support and helping to alleviate the impact of everyday work and personal problems. 

The rationale behind the health and wellness program is that of encouraging healthy habits and active lifestyle to help stress alleviation and prevent or lower the risk of serious health conditions at a later stage. The program shall consist mainly of activities and exercises to keep staff involved in positive living.

Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsible is to lead and execute high intensity, effective, safe and entertaining group exercise classes based in kickboxing and functional strength training for UNDP and UN Agency personnel utilizing the fitness facilities in Juba. The instructor’s main responsibilities will comprise of designing various fitness regimes tailored to the health needs of all staff members through group and individual training sessions. The two main components of the health and wellness program are running fully functional gym facilities and organizing sports activities (badminton, football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, etc).

 

The instructor’s will demonstrate strong customer service orientation, outstanding exercise techniques and commitment to continuous improvement of fitness approach to exercise. The instructor will ensure the workout routines given will meet the fitness level and address the personal goals or the participants, while monitoring their progress. In collaboration with the Common Service team members, he/she will ensure a positive experience for all UNDP and UN Agency personnel and enhance their team needs through promotion of mental and physical health.

The duties include:

  • Ensuring that all gym facilities and equipment are functional and prepared for staff use
  • Keep inventory of gym equipment and make recommendations for replacement or purchase of new equipment as necessary
  • Monitor the misuse of equipment by users
  • Ensure the gym is clean and free of health and safety hazards
  • Ability to perform basic first aid treatments on gym users when necessary
  • Assist with orientation of gym equipment’s for staff
  • Demonstrate to users the correct techniques to minimize injury and improve fitness
  • Assist with organizing of Wellness events, including sporting activities like basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, football and programs;
  • Assist with the production of the Wellness Promotional materials eg. pamphlets;

 

Expected outputs and deliverables:

Based on the detailed list of tasks outlined in the scope of the work section, the contractor is expected to deliver the following outputs:

  • Ensure effective planning, implementation and assessment of wellness activities for UNDP staff and residence in both Naivasha and White Nile.
  • Support the UNDP Staff Association to raise awareness for positive living for UNDP staff
  • Monitor and document staff participation in wellness activities

Profiles:

  • Weight-Bearing Exercise Instructor

Number of Individuals: One (1)

Demonstrate how to carry out various exercises and routines with the use of the gym machines/ equipment’s, watch clients do exercises and show or tell them correct techniques to minimize injury and improve fitness, give alternative exercises during workouts or classes for different levels of fitness and skill, monitor clients’ progress and adapt programs as needed, and the use of exercise equipment, give clients information or resources about nutrition, weight control, and lifestyle issues, give emergency first aid if needed.

Experience:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent with at least one (1) year experience in the health and wellness program.
  • Certified Personal and Group Fitness Trainer (preferred)
  • Weightlifting Instructor

Number of Individuals: One (1)

The instructor should be able to assess people's fitness and creating personal exercise programmes, demonstrating activities, exercise machines and weights, helping people exercise safely, leading group exercise classes, giving advice on healthy eating and lifestyle keeping records, following health and safety guidelines and maintaining equipment, give emergency first aid when needed.

Experience:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing, with at least one (1) year experience
  • Level 2 Diploma in Fitness and Exercise Instruction
  • Physical Ability Instructor

Number of Individuals: One (1)

The instructor must be energetic, enthusiastic in performing aerobic trainings, and enjoy helping others reach their goals. S/he must be a good listener as they are in teaching.

Experience:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent with at least one (1) year experience in the health and wellness program.
  • Certified Personal and Group Fitness Trainer (preferred)
  • Sporting Facilities Instructors

Number of Individuals: One (1)

The Instructor use His/her expertise in a specific discipline such as badminton, table tennis, basketball etc., to impart knowledge and demonstrate the basic principles, rules, safety procedures, technical language of a sport, fundamentals, and techniques of the sports they teach. They are to organize and plan competitions and other activities in collaboration with other UN Agencies.

Experience:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent with at least two (2) year experience in Sport, Occupational health and safety program.

Language:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required
