Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP works through 136 country offices to provide development advocacy, advice and assistance to 166 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Arab States, Eastern Europe, CIS, Latin America and the Caribbean, working to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS) in New York leads UNDP’s work across the Arab Region. RBAS Planning, Oversight and Support team provides overall guidance and quality assurance of the overall work on the Country offices in the region. It comes as part of UNDP’s global effort to become a more effective and efficient organization, fit for its purpose – to help countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and leave no one behind.

This internship will focus on (a) supporting RBAS Planning, Oversight and Support team in UNDP-led crisis and recovery-related resource mobilization efforts in close coordination with relevant units; (b) Contributing to knowledge management activities and efforts; and (c) supporting research and briefs on a broad range of sustainable development issues, including climate change, urbanization, crisis governance, inclusive growth, gender and innovative opportunities to accelerate  SDGs achievement in complex contexts in the Arab region.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Supervisor the intern shall perform the following functions:

  • Contributing background development materials on relevant country projects to the Regional Adviser, for prototyping for integrated support to countries in Arab States;
  • Providing input to the development of quarterly reports, capacity reviews/assessment reports profiles, policy papers, briefing notes, and speeches, as requested by the supervisor;
  • Contributing to the development and review of knowledge products in close coordination with the regional teams by analyzing and sharing lessons learned and programme evaluation results as well as targeted interventions in crisis countries; and
  • Providing support in the organization of workshops, quarterly meetings, country dialogues sessions and other SDG related events.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in Economics, Strategic Planning, International Relations, Public Policy, international business administration or international development studies (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  3. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

 

Language Requirements:

Proficient in written and spoken English. Knowledge of Arabic and French would be an asset.

 

Conditions of internship:

  • In accordance with the UNDP Internship policy, UNDP interns are eligible to receive a monthly stipend, with the rate that varies depending on the duty location.    
  • Where an intern is financially supported by an institution, government or third party, UNDP will, subject to the rules of such institution, government or third party, pay the intern the difference, if any, between the external financial support provided and the applicable UNDP stipend. .
  • Except for the stipend, all other expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring government or institutions.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan.
    Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
