Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In view of its mandate, UN Women works on raising awareness and changing social norms leveraging international days and campaigns. International Days include International Women’s Day, International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, International Girl Child Day, etc.

Main campaigns include:

Generation Equality - UN Women’s Generation Equality campaign marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most visionary agenda for women’s rights and empowerment everywhere. This inter-generational and youth-centered campaign aims to make gender equality a real, relatable and relevant issue for everyone through awareness raising, social mobilization and action driving.

HeForShe – This action-oriented movement towards gender equality invites men, women and all genders around the world to stand together to create a bold, visible force for gender equality. Since its launch on 20 September 2014, hundreds of thousands of men from around the world, including Heads of State, CEOs and global luminaries, have committed to gender equality.   

UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign that support 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence Campaign and rallies governments, individuals and civil society organizations to raise public awareness, increase political will and resources as well as strengthen partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

The purpose of this internship is to support planning and executing of campaigns (Generation Equality, UNiTE to End Violence against Women, HeForShe) as well as cause marketing campaigns, supporting partnerships in areas of youth and sport engagement, research and data, workshops and events. The intern will receive overall supervision from the Advocacy and Campaign Coordinator.

  • Assist in planning campaign activities and implementing them;
  • Support in organizing high-level events;
  • Assist in preparation of knowledge resources, communications, presentations and background material for internal and external use, including campaign action kits;
  • Design posters, brochures, and other visibility materials;
  • Assist in mapping of best practices, researching of innovative approaches, and building databases;
  • Coordinate campaigns related production and work of vendors;
  • Support preparation of content for websites and social media;
  • Provide support in researching potential partners (key influencers, HNWIs, foundations, etc.);
  • Provide support in reporting and sharing best practices.

Functional Competencies:

  • Demonstrated experience in work related to communications, marketing, social media outreach and journalism, whether voluntary (such as campaigning), private (such as blogging, creative writing, etc.) or professional;
  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equality, women’s empowerment and ending violence against women, with experience on the topic;
  • Capacity to plan and lead social media campaigns;  
  • Ability to think and work logically and work precisely, delivering quality products under tight deadlines;
  • Good design skills are required;
  • Strong social media skills.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: communications, journalism, marketing, gender studies, social sciences or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation, or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of Thai is an advantage.

 

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
