Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women’s China Office in Beijing supports and carries out work on (i) enhancing women's economic empowerment; (ii) ending violence against women; and (iii) innovative work to address gender issues in China. In addition to the above, UN Women also actively participates and contributes to various UN inter-agency processes and collaborates with UN organizations around specific programme areas.
Experience proves that a significant amount of translation and interpretation services are needed to facilitate UN Women's programmes, projects, and office work, especially with concept notes and proposals, strategic policy and research documents, written communications with partners and the general public, meetings, workshops, and events. Therefore, it is crucial to have two professional Chinese-English interpreters to provide UN Women China Office with simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation for events, and written translation of documents. The two interpreters would work as teams of one pair in providing simultaneous interpretation at events but could work separately for other types of assignments (consecutive interpretation and written translation).
Duties and Responsibilities
Translator and interpreter will be in direct contact with UN Women Partnership Specialist. She/he will work under the supervision of the UN Women Partnership Specialist and will be ultimately responsible to UN Women Head of Office in China.
The translators and interpreters will be engaged under a retainer contract and are expected to provide high quality Chinese to English and English to Chinese translation and interpretation services to UN Women China Office on a per assignment basis. The contract will be for one year in length, but individual assignments will vary from a half day to a week or more. Assignments can include translation of documents, simultaneous or consecutive interpretation at events, or any combination of these duties. Travel may be required for some assignments. UN Women China Office will identify in advance translation/interpretation assignments, ascertain whether the hired interpreters are available during the time period of the assignment, and clearly inform the hired interpreters of the nature, timeframe, and expected outputs for each assignment. After completion of the assignment, the interpreters will be required to submit an invoice detailing time spent on task and/or number of characters/words translated.
