UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
To support member states in implementing the 2030 Agenda, UN Women’s global gender data programme, “Making Every Woman and Girl Count” (Women Count), aims to affect a radical shift in the availability, accessibility and use of data and statistics on key aspects of gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Programme is implementing a multi-year and multi-country programme of work, supported by global and regional activities linking normative and technical work on gender statistics at the global level to the regional and national levels through three interlinked areas of work:
The Statistics Specialist is located in the Research and Data Section of UN Women Headquarters. S/he reports directly to UN Women’s Chief Statistician who provides overall strategic leadership and direction in the planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of Women Count. The Statistics Specialist will manage and oversee the technical implementation and statistical capacity development initiatives of the Women Count programme and coordinate technical support to regions and countries implementing the Women Count programme. S/he will work in an integrated, coordinated, and systems strengthening approach which is fundamental to UN Women’s overall strategy and Women Count’s implementation at global, regional and country levels.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the Statistics Specialist are in the areas of overall quality assurance of Women Count statistical operations and advisory services, inter-regional coordination and technical guidance, capacity development and management of global projects on strengthening gender statistical systems.
Lead the quality assurance of statistical operations and advisory services:
Take responsibility for inter-regional coordination and technical guidance on Gender Statistics to UN Women regional and country offices implementing Women Count:
Oversee capacity strengthening efforts of the Women Count programme:
Manage global projects or components of the Women Count programme aimed at strengthening gender statistical systems:

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
