The Spotlight Initiative is a global, multi-year partnership between the European Union and the United Nations to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls by 2030. Launched with a seed funding commitment of €500 million from the European Union, the Spotlight Initiative represents an unprecedented global effort to invest in gender equality and women’s empowerment as a precondition and driver for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative builds on knowledge and lessons learned from past programmes.

As a project office, the Secretariat of the Spotlight Initiative supports the Operational Steering Committee and is comprised of a Management Unit and Technical Unit. The two units work in close collaboration and in a complementary manner.

The Management Unit provides operational and administrative support to the Governing Body and Operational Steering Committees. It is responsible for the coordination and day-to-day management of the Initiative. The Management Unit also codifies policies and rules of procedure into an Operations Manual, which includes a Risk Management Strategy. Additionally, the Management Unit provides strategic advice and quality control over the implementation of the initiative and coordinates meetings. It facilitates collaboration and communication between the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, recipient United Nations organizations, and the Resident Coordinators regarding the operations, when necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Spotlight Secretariat Head of Management Unit and Fund Coordination Manager, interns may be asked to perform the following tasks:

•    review narrative and financial reports and provide feedback to UN Country Teams;
•    take minutes for meetings and events;
•    maintain the Frequently Asked Questions document and contribute to country support;
•    create and edit budget templates on Excel;
•    support with file management and organization on the internal shared drive;
•    prepare documents for Operational Steering Committee meetings and other governance purposes;
•    conduct research;
•    write and edit documents such as guidance notes;
•    provide coordination and administrative support to the Management Unit; and
•    any other tasks as assigned by the reporting managers.

Required Skills and Experience


  • This internship opportunity calls for students in international relations, political science, economics, development, law or related social sciences fields who are currently:
  • enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
  • have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, will start the internship within one year of graduation.


  • No professional experience necessary. However, professional experience with international organizations or international development with a foundation in writing and research is a distinct advantage.

Language Requirements

  • All applicants must be fluent in both written and spoken English.
  • Additional UN languages (especially French and Spanish) are a distinct advantage.


  • Interns are expected to work part time, full time or as agreed with supervisors from Monday - Friday between 9:30am - 5:00pm for up to 6 months. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, interns will work remotely in keeping with UN/UNDP policy on telecommuting until there is a decision for the intern to return to office.

Financial Arrangements

  • All UNDP interns are eligible to receive a stipend in accordance with UNDP policy. The stipend will be a single monthly rate with prorated deductions for absences beyond accrued leave days (1.5 days per month). Both full-time and part-time interns are eligible to receive this stipend, but the amount will be prorated to reflect the part-time status of the intern.

Duration of internship

  • The duration of an internship assignment varies in length according to the availability and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of MPTFO/UNDP. Assignments are available for a minimum of 6 weeks to a maximum of 6 months.

Health and Medical Insurance

  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. Applicants for internship must therefore carry adequate and regular medical insurance. Proof of medical coverage must be provided before the internship starts.

Further Career Opportunities

  • The purpose of internships is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but rather to complement an intern's studies. However, a number of interns, having completed their studies and met the necessary requirements, have gone on to further assignments with UNDP or elsewhere in the United Nations system.
