Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations (UN), works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.  Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, the UN Women leads and coordinates UN system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.

Based on UN legislative mandates and the UN Women’s Strategic Plan, the Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) is tasked with providing strategic programme development, policy/technical advisory services and quality assurance support to Multi Country Offices and Country Offices (COs). It undertakes or coordinates regional research and data analysis; advises on norms, policies and strategies for achieving the internationally and regionally agreed goals related to gender equality and women’s empowerment issues. It acts as a knowledge hub at the regional level, collecting evidence on progress and emerging issues and sharing knowledge on innovative approaches and lessons learned in implementation.

The UN Women implements a regional project titled Strengthening Human Rights and Gender Equality through Climate Change Action and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) (hereinafter called the EmPower project). The project is implemented in partnership with the UN Environment and the funding from the Swedish International Development Agency. 

The Project aims to contribute to addressing key drivers of gender-based vulnerabilities through engendering climate change and DRR actions in Asia and the Pacific. The Project will work in five output areas:

• Output 1: Women and marginalized groups are able to exercise their rights to lead, meaningfully participate in, and influence climate change and DRR decision-making processes;
• Output 2: Governments and key stakeholders are able to generate, analyse and use sex, age, and diversity disaggregated data to inform climate change and disaster risks and actions;
• Output 3: National and regional climate change and DRR regulatory and policy frameworks and climate change financing integrate and enhance responsiveness to human rights and gender equality commitments;
• Output 4: Women are able to exercise rights to access and control economic resources, through renewable energy to build resilient and transformative livelihoods;
• Output 5: Regional normative processes, knowledge products and platforms on climate change and DRR integrate and enhance responsiveness to gender equality and human rights.

The project is implemented in three countries - Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam; and regionally in Asia and the Pacific. The five-year project is currently in its implementation phase which goes until December 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Specialist on Gender, CC&DRR and in close collaboration with the Communications Consultant of UN Women under the project and UN Women Regional Communications Unit, the Expert media trainer and facilitator will undertake the following tasks:

• Support in finalizing the concept and identifying experts for the four sessions
• Researching, developing content and course materials including any presentation decks, exercise materials, international examples
• Facilitating/ delivering the four sessions along with other experts and facilitating any break-out discussions with participants
• Support in refining story pitches (outputs of the workshop) from the participants
• Session debrief notes and guidance for future workshops and engagements with media-persons and storytellers
• Undertaking an evaluation with participants- either survey or group discussion-based

Expected Deliverables

*Payment will be made upon submission of deliverables with an approval of the UN Women Programme Specialist (climate change and gender).

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in Communications, Journalism, Media, International Development or related field.

Experience:

• A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in journalism, communications for environment, gender equality, climate change or international development.
• Proven experience reporting on issues of gender equality, environmental sustainability, climate change or disasters, public policy and administration geared to inform a variety of audiences, including general public, government officials and development organizations.
• Proven experience in formulating stories, using data and evidence to support storytelling and proofreading editorial material, including the use of style guides.
• Work experience on projects financed by international organizations, such as UN agencies, will be an asset.
• Fluency in English.

Payments

Payments for this consultancy will be based on the achievement of each deliverable and certification that each has been satisfactorily completed. Payments will not be based on the number of days worked but on the completion of each stated deliverable within the indicated timeframes.
