UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Multi-Country Office for the Caribbean (MCO-Caribbean) implements this mandate in twenty-two countries and territories across the Caribbean. This work is implemented by core personnel based in Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica and is supported by a team of consultants spread across the Caribbean region and globally based. The office is currently expanding to have personnel based in Grenada and Guyana.

The programmatic work of the office for the next three years includes major projects across the Caribbean region in collaboration with other UN agencies including the EU funded Spotlight project in four countries, the joint UN Human Security Trust fund project, a Sustainable Development Goals project, a Climate Change and Resilience project, and a Gender Transformative Humanitarian Response Project. The office works with Governments and their agencies across the Caribbean, and with Civil Society Organisations. 

As a result of this large expansion in programmatic work, the office needs strong operational support.  Its Operations team provides key functional support to the programme delivery of the office including management of budgets, monitoring of use of finances by partners, conducting human resources, procurement, finance, and administrative functions.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will work with the Operations team of the MCO-Caribbean Office, supporting these key functions. The Operations team is situated in Barbados. The intern will learn about the dynamic functions of the UN, the collaborative work among UN agencies, operational processes, their importance to programmatic delivery, and learn how the interaction of operations and programme together achieve programme delivery.

Under the overall supervision of the UN Women MCO Representative and the day-today supervision of the UN Women MCO Operations Manager, the intern will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Human Resources support – support in the recruitment process of consultants from the advertising process to the selection of the candidate.
  • Procurement support – support with procurement processes for the offices and for programme delivery. The intern will learn about the use of an e-procurement system
  • UN Common Services and  Joint Operational activities – support in common services and joint operations collaborations among the UN agencies in Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana
  •  Administration – support as required in other administrative areas including e-filing, developing/populating an e-registry system in collaboration with the operations team

Functional Competencies:

Required Skills and Experience


  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: Social Sciences including management, economics, accounting, or other relevant subjects; Science and Technology including computer sciences, mathematics or other relevant subjects, is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation, or be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.


  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.



Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
