The Accelerator Labs are UNDP’s new way of working in development. The labs will transform our collective approach by introducing new services, backed by evidence and practice, and by accelerating the testing and dissemination of solutions within and across countries. Sense-making, collective intelligence, solutions mapping and experimentation will be part of the new offer from UNDP to governments.

Together with national and global partners, 60 labs serving 78 countries will work together to find radically new approaches that fit the complexity of current development challenges. The labs will analyze challenges within local contexts to identify connections and patterns in search of new avenues of work to act effectively in addressing wicked development challenges.

The intern will work with the Accelerator Lab Malaysia to develop and deploy Accelerator Lab methodologies to address development challenges in Malaysia. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will assist in the following duties and responsibilities:

Knowledge support - 40%

  • Assist in data collection and management, including identifying unusual or untapped data sources
  • Assist in liaising with data providers and partners
  • Assist in documentation of Accelerator Lab learnings

Project and programme support - 30%

  • Assist in event management and logistics
  • Assist in volunteer recruitment, management and mobilisation
  • Support other/ad hoc activities as seen relevant and needed

Technical support - 30%

  • Assist in setting up systems and processes for the Accelerator Lab
  • Assist in the teaching and dissemination of Accelerator Lab methodologies
  • Assist in communications and publicity

Required Skills and Experience

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:
currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree; or
currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or
have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent studies; or
enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.

Field of study: All academic backgrounds welcome, but priority will be given to candidates with interdisciplinary experience, e.g., science and society, social sciences, arts and humanities, policy or equivalent. 

IT skills:
Knowledge and a proficient user of Microsoft Office productivity tools;
Familiarity with design, mapping, remote sensing and/or social media tools and platforms is an advantage.

Language skills:
Malay and English required;
Other major Malaysian languages, e.g., Chinese and Tamil, is an advantage;
Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.


  • UNDP will provide a stipend in the amount of RM637.50 monthly in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship policy.  Except for the stipend, all other expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern or her/his sponsoring entity;
  • Where an intern is financially supported by an institution, government or third party, UNDP will pay the intern the difference, if any, between the external financial support provided and the applicable UNDP stipend.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • Selected Interns must be able to share proof of education enrolment and/ or graduation, medical/ health and life/accident insurance, valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out and be able to provide insurance documentary proof at the time of their selection;
  • Interns are expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • Interns are not considered staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
