Background

The Resident Coordinator (RC) system encompasses all organizations of the UN system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their formal presence in the country. The RC system brings together the various UN agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level. RCs are leaders of the UN Country Teams (UNCT) in over 130 countries and are the designated representatives of the Secretary-General at the country level. Working closely with national governments, RCs advocate the interests and mandates of the UN system while drawing on the support and guidance of the entire UN family.

 

In Jordan, the UN country team (UNCT) consists of 17 agencies and supports Jordan’s efforts for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), under the UN Sustainable Development Framework (UNSDF). the UN’s five-year strategic partnership framework aims at supporting Jordan in achieving Jordan Vision 2025 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in its response to the regional context, as well as towards the articulation of a more coherent resilience-based approach.

The Communication Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Communication and Advocacy Specialist to help the RC Office, in the fulfilment of its Advocacy and Communication roles in support of the UNCT. The Communication Intern will work online, with frequent reporting to the office, in close collaboration with the Communication Group. She/he carries out day-to-day work under the direct supervision and advice of the Communication Specialist and in accordance with the established policies and procedures.

Setting and Reporting

The internship opportunity is located in the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Amman, - Jordan and reports to the Communications and Advocacy Specialist.

Duration of Internship Programme and Working Hours

  • Internship assignments vary in length according to the academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UNDP. Assignments normally last a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of six months. An internship may last up to nine months if the intern can demonstrate that it will award them an educational credit for a course.
  • Internship assignments completed as part of national service obligations or a postgraduate professional traineeship program may last up to 12 months.
  • This Internship is available on full-time basis, five days a week from Sunday to Thursday

Stipend

  • Where an intern is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation or scholarship programme, a stipend intended to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station, must be paid by the receiving office.
  • The monthly amount of the stipend will be determined for each duty station based on the stipend rates published yearly by the OHR Policy and Compensation Unit. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.
  • Where an intern is financially supported by an institution, government or third party, UNDP will, subject to the rules of such institution, government or third party, pay the intern the difference, if any, between the external financial support provided and the applicable UNDP stipend.
  • No other payments of any kind will be made to an intern by the office in connection with an internship agreement.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Communication and Advocacy Specialist, the Intern will be provided an opportunity to learn about the UN through performing an array of duties that support the UN mandate.

Duties of Intern

  • Support in drafting communication material including for the UN Jordan website and social media channels (including in Arabic), such as impact stories and social media posts.
  • Support in the creation and implementation of the monthly social media calendar.
  • Assist in researching top trends relevant to the UN on social media 
  • Support in the organization of press conferences, workshops, high-level visits, and advocacy events;
  • Support the coordination with the United Nations Communication Group.
  • Gather information from UN agencies for the UN Jordan website and provide creative inputs for maintenance of website
  • Support in the implementation of the national and global campaigns.
  • Support the engagement of youth movements and civil society organizations in the national and global campaigns.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicants to the internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements under disciplines of communications, international studies, international relations, journalism, political science, international relations, English Language, Multimedia or other relevant subjects is required.

a. Be enrolled in a master’s degree or higher

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of bachelor’s degree programme or equivalent;

c. Have recently graduated with university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;

d. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Language requirements:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Arabic are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
