Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Within its flagship programme on ending violence against women, the Spotlight Initiative (SI); UN Women Zimbabwe is strengthening the capacity of women’s groups, autonomous social movements and civil society organisations[1] at community level to design, implement and monitor programmes on VAWG, including SGBV/HP, and to promote women and girls’ SRHR. This will be done in order to build a strong social movement against SGBV, harmful practices and to promote sexual and reproductive health and rights. The Agency is therefore; supporting the deployment of graduate interns - referred to as Innovators Against Gender Based Violence (IAGs) and providing in-house technical support to women's groups and CSOs through this internship programme whilst promoting volunteerism at community level to produce a sustainable social movement.

UN Women has together with the lead organizations implementing pillar six interventions selected and deployed 36 of these IAGS from the Social Sciences and Finance/Administration fields to the 5 Spotlight provinces of Mashonaland Central 10; Mashonaland West -8; Matabeleland South - 8; Manicaland - 6 and Harare – 4  to participate in a 12 months unique experiential learning, including sharing of knowledge and experience as part of the technical support to organisations and community groups working on women’s rights, disability, children’s rights, HIV, masculinities, SRHR and key populations, contributing to building a strong and visible social movement against SGBV and HPs, that is inclusive of women and men from all sectors in Zimbabwe.

The Innovators Against Gender Based Violence (IAGs) have brought new energy, creativity, knowledge and skills of university graduates, while also addressing youth unemployment in Zimbabwe. During their deployment, the IAGs have supported the design of innovative programmes and campaigns that address SGBV/HP/SRHR in the districts where they have been stationed. UN Women oriented the IAGs in various professional soft skills as well as the expected results of the programme before deployment in 2019.
