Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) was established through the UN General Assembly Resolution 50/166 in 1996 with UN Women as its Administrator on behalf of the UN system. The UN Trust Fund is a global multi-lateral grant making mechanism supporting national efforts to prevent and end violence against women and girls, one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. The UN Trust Fund provides technical assistance and funding to advance the development of innovative models and strategic interventions in the area of ending violence against women and girls. To date, the UN Trust Fund has awarded US $183 million to 572 initiatives in 140 countries and territories.

Under the supervision of the UN Trust Fund Resource Mobilization and Advocacy Manager and in close collaboration with UN Women colleagues in the field and UN Women Communications Section in Headquarters, the External Relations and Advocacy Analyst will be responsible for coordinating UN Trust Fund’s communications, outreach, global advocacy and provide support to building partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide technical inputs to the development of UN Trust Fund’s advocacy, partnerships and resource mobilization promotional strategies  and activities:

  • Draft and coordinate the implementation of UN Trust Fund’s external communications, advocacy and resource mobilization action plan in line with the UN Trust Fund’s strategy;
  • Translate UN Trust Fund’s practitioner-based knowledge into advocacy messages;
  • Plan and implement internal and external communications and advocacy outreach activities;
  • Develop and organize UN Trust Fund advocacy and other promotional activities and events;
  • Provide technical input to UN Trust Fund’s focal points in UN Women field offices and UN Women National Committees in their activities as related and relevant to raising awareness about the UN Trust Fund work and resource mobilization.

Provide advocacy support to the Resource Mobilization and Advocacy Manager to position UN Trust Fund as the unique global interagency Fund by highlighting its practices and results:

  • Inform and share knowledge with UN Trust Fund donors, civil society and members of the larger global community working to prevent and end violence against women and girls;
  • Build  and maintain  partnerships with donors, UN agencies, UN Trust Fund grantees and civil society and international and national groups leading to provision of support to the UN Trust Fund in its advocacy and resource mobilization efforts and activities;
  • Draft inputs for speeches, talking points, official statements and other relevant materials as needed and requested.

Oversee all activities related to conceptualizing, design and production of all UN Trust Fund communications and advocacy materials and online presence:

  • Coordinate multimedia (photo/video/text) projects from inception of an idea to the final product and its distribution;
  • Identify results across the UN Trust Fund portfolio of the grantees and drafts project-based snapshots to feed into the UN Trust Fund’s reporting and communications products.
  • Coordinate the editing, design and production of all UN Trust Fund external communications materials including website case studies, external briefs and UN Trust Fund social media accounts;
  • Coordinate the design, development and maintenance of the UN Trust Fund web site;
  • Coordinate the UN Trust Funds social media presence and development of online activities with an aim to increase the online visibility of the Fund and a number of its followers.

Provide other support as requested.

  • Effective and ongoing communications and dissemination of information about the UN Trust Fund’s work, its results and impact particularly to its donors;
  • Impact of UN Trust Fund external communications, advocacy and resource mobilization action plan and promotional strategies on reaching a number of new donors, as well as reaching UN Trust Fund resource mobilization targets;
  • Communications becomes a strong component of business growth and development in the UN Trust Fund.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 

  • Master's Degree in Social Sciences, Public Administration, International Relations, Economics or related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: 

  • At least 2 years of proven relevant experience at the international level in programming, communications and external relations;
  • Experience in the field of preventing and ending violence against women and girls in a multilateral or international organization;
  • Experience with design and layout of documents, print materials, and web content;
  • Experience in building new partnerships  for the purpose of resource mobilization will be an advantage.

Languages: 

  • Fluency in English (written and oral);
  • Fluency in French or Spanish will be considered an asset.
