Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Working in China since 1998, UN Women provides technical and financial assistance to innovative programmes and strategies for gender equality and women's empowerment. UN Women’s China Office supports and carries out work on (i) enhancing women's economic empowerment; (ii) providing support for advancing normative agenda on gender equality and women’s empowerment, particularly to address gender based violence and discrimination; and (iii) ) innovative partnerships to address gender issues in China and bring good practices from China to other countries globally. In addition to the above, UN Women also actively participates and contributes to various UN inter-agency processes and collaborates with UN organizations around specific programme areas.

Investing in women’s economic empowerment sets a direct path towards gender equality. As one of the main thematic areas and priorities of UN Women China office, the Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) team has grown significantly since WEE-related projects started implementation in 2015.

There is a portfolio of ongoing projects funded by various donors as well as future initiatives and programmes planned under the umbrella of WEE work which require comparable capacity to meet the demand of large quantity of writing and reporting needs, providing quality control and reflecting the results-based and efficient discipline.

UN Women China office is seeking to recruit an English Writer on a retainer contract, whose duties are as articulated below. Under the guidance and supervision UN Women’s WEE programme managers as relevant, the English writer will provide writing services ensuring high quality, accuracy and consistency of our communications and reporting work. The writer promotes a client-oriented approach consistent with UN Women rules and regulations. The writer works in close collaboration with the programme team to exchange information and ensure consistent service delivery.

Duties and Responsibilities

Roles and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the WEE project managers of UN Women, the English writer will be responsible for the achievement of the following tasks and deliverables specific for WEE team:

  • Report writing, polishing, and proofreading based on the corporate and programme needs.
  • Writing, and polishing as needed to produce high quality, reader-friendly, accessible, timely, results-based corporate materials including but not limited to donor report, Concept note, speeches, Communications materials and other documents aligned with UN Women's established standards and formats, and in compliance with UN Women China office clearance and routing process.

 

Duration of Assignment

From 15 March 2021 to 14 March 2022. The English writer will be engaged under a retainer contract, which facilitates direct engagement of the writer depending on need and availability within the contract period for a pre-agreed fee.

UN Women does not warrant that the maximum number of 180 days will be purchased during the term of the Agreement.

Required Skills and Experience

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Master's degree or other advanced degree in one or more of the following disciplines: social sciences, international development, communications and other related fields is required.
  • Minimum of 3-year working experience in Women’s Economic Empowerment is required.
  • Experience in gender-sensitive and results-based management is an advantage.
  • Experience in writing, editing, and reporting is preferred.
  • Demonstrated abilities and track record writing high quality English-language communication materials and reports, preferably within UN system is an asset.

 

Selection Criteria

The candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria: (i) educational background and work experience as reflected in their CV; (ii) writing samples; and (iii) financial proposal, which includes daily consultancy rate. The evaluation will be based on the combination of the weighted technical and financial scores (70 per cent technical and 30 per cent financial). The evaluation methods include desk review and/or interview.
