Internal auditing is an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization’s operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.
Performed by professionals with an in-depth understanding of the business culture, systems, and processes, the internal audit activity provides assurance that internal controls in place are adequate to mitigate the risks, governance processes are effective and efficient, and organizational goals and objectives are met.
In UNDP, the internal audit function is managed by the Office of Audit and Investigations. The Office consists of approximately 90 staff (Audit and Investigations), and it conducts its audits in conformance with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing as published by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) standards. OAI follows a risk-based approach to planning and conducting its internal audit work. The internal audit reports serve to give senior management assurance about the activities undertaken by a given UNDP unit and bring to their attention areas of risk that require improvement.
Further, and per its Charter, the Office of Audit and Investigations can provide consulting and advisory services to UNDP to help the organization improve risk management, add value, and improve the organization’s operations. This is part of OAI’s mandate and in line with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
