Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Country Context

In recent years, conflict in Ethiopia has displaced many Ethiopians. Ethiopia is also hosting a huge number of refugees from neighboring countries. As anywhere else in the world, women and children are highly and disproportionately being affected by a lack of peace in the country. While women can contribute to peacebuilding and conflict resolution efforts, they are mostly marginalized and portrayed as victims only. To ensure comprehensive response in peacebuilding and conflict resolution, there is a need for advocacy and capacity building of government, CSOs, media and women groups on the issue of WPS and developing and implementation of a National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. The UN Security Council Resolution 1325, unanimously adopted in October 2000, stressed the importance of equal participation and full involvement of women in conflict prevention and resolution, relief and recovery efforts and maintaining and promoting peace and security. The Government of Ethiopia has committed to developing a National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security to provide a comprehensive framework to implement UNSCR 1325 and subsequent resolutions and ensure the full and meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. UN Women in Ethiopia is therefore committed to supporting the Government of Ethiopia and other key actors in the promotion of the WPS agenda in Ethiopia.
