Background

The mission of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to

 i) alleviate human suffering and disasters in emergencies; ii) advocate for the rights of people in need; iii) promote preparedness and prevention, and iv) facilitate sustainable solutions.

 

As part of its operations, OCHA regional office for Syria crisis produces and delivers a number of information products and services including data coordination, databases, and infographics which inform the humanitarian community in their response to the humanitarian situation in the country.

 

The Information Management Officer (Graphic Designer) reports to the Head of IMU or designate. The incumbent will provide information management services and products, with focus on data management and visualization (graphic design). The IMO (GD) will be the focal point for the maintenance and implementation of OCHA’s graphic guidelines

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head of the Information Management Unit, the Information Management officer (Graphic Design) will be expected to support the implementation and maintenance of OCHA’s graphic guidelines and to:

 

  • Determines the primary data and information elements that are required for visualization to support inter-cluster coordination and humanitarian decision-making
  • Designs and implements a dissemination plan for all information products produced by OCHA (e.g. situation reports, data, maps).
  • Lay-out recurrent and ad hoc reports in close cooperation with the author/project manager and design templates for new publications and products in line with graphic guidelines.
  • Adapt the existing guidelines and templates to Arabic text requirements.
  • Improve and edit art-works, photos, charts and other graphic elements.
  • Assist in establishing and be responsible for maintaining a photo archive.
  • Implement the graphic guidelines in OCHA products;
  • Create compelling graphics and deliver creative and innovative ideas for print, web, social media, and interactive presentations.
  • Provide technical support, capacity building and guidance to other staff in design essentials
  • Follow-up on all products produced through out all hubs and make sure they follow OCHA graphic guidelines

 

  1. Maintain and strengthen OCHA branding, focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Managing the processing/analysis of data and information and presenting it in the format most useful for analysis (e.g. reports, maps, infographic, and interactive graphics) for electronic distribution and/or printing.
  • Safeguard and ensure that publications, reports and products are produced in line with the graphic guidelines;

 

2) UN Coordination

  • Maintain a client-oriented approach that ensures the IMU provides high-quality information management services and products to its stakeholders.
  • Assist with streamlining of internal information management processes in OCHA Syria through training and assistance with establishment of relevant guidelines and procedures.
  • Any other duties as may be requested by the IM Head of Unit

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Advanced university degree in Graphic Design, Arts, Multimedia, Geographic Information Systems, Information Management, Statistics, or Social Sciences, or related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum two (2) years of work experience with a master’s degree or four (4) years of experience with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design is required.
  • Proven experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product.
  • Fully proficient skills in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, MS Word, ArcGIS and MS PowerPoint
  • Good understanding of web design development (converting graphics into HTML/CSS and/or SVG/JavaScript) is desirable
  •  Relevant experience in working with an UN agency or other humanitarian agency is a plus.
