Background

UNDP is the UN Development Programme and works in 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, reduction of inequalities, and exclusion while protecting the planet. The Office of Budget, Performance and Compliance (BPC)/ Bureau of Management (BMS), supports the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the promotion of its sustainable human development agenda. It achieves this by developing and making fully operational a dynamic and harmonized integrated resource management framework based on comprehensive analysis that enhances UNDP’s financial and administrative performance, as well as facilitates UN reform and coherence.  To these ends, the framework addresses strategically critical financial and administrative resource planning and management issues, including results based budgeting;  the integration of the Programming Arrangements and the Institutional Budget within the context of the integrated budget; enhanced cost classification and cost recovery;  support to UN harmonization; capital budgeting;  Corporate Dashboard and other performance management initiatives.

In this regard, under the direct supervision and guidance of the Finance Specialist, Budget Team BPC, and under the overall leadership of the Manager, Budget Team,  BMS/BPC is seeking for home-based or in-person Budget intern to support researching, analysing, forecasting, and interpreting budgetary, financial and other management information; preparing budgetary and other management reports; and providing advisory services to BPC staff and clients.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Researching, analysing and interpreting budgetary and other management information. This includes:
    • Providing specialized or general calculations and analysis in support of various budgetary and reporting functions; preparing specialized or highly complex reports, forecasts, analyses and interpretations utilizing advanced knowledge and proficiency in budgetary and accounting practices, principles and interrelationships for management and other stakeholders. 
  2. Preparing budgetary and other management reports as requested. This includes:
    • Reviews and analyses of business unit budgetary performance.
    • Budgetary inputs in relation to the preparation of financial statements in accordance with UNDP financial regulations and rules and accounting policies.  
  3. Providing advisory services to BPC staff and clients. This includes advice on:
    • Supporting the budgetary analysis and management reporting work for UNDP’s Senior Management. 
  4. Completing other duties, as may be assigned.

  • Knowledge of ERP/financial or budgetary systems (e.g. Oracle or People Soft) is an asset.

 

 

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as described above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  • Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferably some relevant experience in international development or related area; Knowledge of the UN system is an advantage.

Languages:

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language, is desirable.

Intern conditions:

  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • UNDP offers a monthly stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station;
  • All other expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
