Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In Ukraine UN Women works with the government, parliament and civil society in advancing gender equality through implementation of the national and international commitments on gender equality and women’s human rights. UN Women Ukraine implements interventions towards the realization of following strategic goals: elimination of violence against women and girls; implementation of women, peace and security agenda and gender responsive governance. UN Women works closely with the UN Country Team in integration of women’s rights and gender equality in all spheres of UN work.

Reporting to the UN Women Representative, the Advocacy and Communications Analyst is responsible for leading the planning and implementation of the Country Office communications and advocacy strategies to increase awareness about gender equality and women’s empowerment issues and UN Women’s work and achievements in this area in Ukraine and among partners, the media and the general public. 

The Advocacy and Communications Analyst works in close collaboration with the Programme, Operations and technical teams in the CO, HQ/Regional communications teams, staff of other UN Agencies, Government officials, media, multilateral and bilateral donors and civil society.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and coordinate communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans

  • Prepare and conduct communication needs assessments for the CO, including projects, programmes and corporate change initiatives;
  • Manage annual partners’ perception surveys about UN Women work and apply the results in the CO communications and advocacy strategies and plans;
  • Analyze requirements and synthesize proposals for elaboration of communication strategies; ensure gender perspective;
  • Integrate communication, advocacy and outreach strategies into proposals for project/programmes and other initiatives;
  • Develop, coordinate, implement and monitor the implementation of the CO annual communications and advocacy, as well as publications plans
  • Coordinate and implement in-country UN Women/ UN system corporate and local campaigns and special events ensuring their compliance with the corporate identity and priorities;
  • Coordinate the work of the projects’ communications staff
  • Provide advice and guidance to CO on advocacy and communication issues.

Coordinate and implement the development and dissemination of communication and advocacy materials in the country/region

  • Oversee the quality and compliance of the CO visual and print products with the UN Women corporate branding, publication, photo, social media and the other guidelines
  • Develop and produce communication instruments and materials, including briefing materials, press releases, and drafts of articles, and manage its dissemination
  • Identify and propose information opportunities for dissemination of UN Women corporate products, activities, approaches, platforms and partners
  • Promote and disseminate corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives, publications, and campaigns
  • Manage the translation/adaption/rewriting of information received, printing and dissemination of publications and audio-visual materials
  • Follow guidelines from HQ and RO and advise the CO team on the required guidelines, standards and requirements.

Coordinate media relations for the Country Office

  • Manage relationships with press in the country; maintain and update database of relevant press;
  • Build and maintain relationships with key media organizations in the country;
  • Respond to a variety of inquiries and information requests, prepare related correspondence;
  • Organize roundtable discussions, press conferences and briefing sessions for press, as required;
  • Draft talking points for the management.

Build and maintain partnerships and maintain relations with donors

  • Continuously identify and build new communication partnerships and alliances to enhance UN Women Ukraine visibility;
  • Develop partnerships for joint advocacy with civil society organizations, governments, private sector partners, media and other stakeholders to ensure that our advocacy around key issues reach the target audience, including the public and the donors;
  • Provide inputs to packages for programme initiatives for donor review.

Maintain the Country Office web/ online presence

  • Develop and manage the CO website, provide oversight and quality assurance into its contents based on corporate requirements;
  • Manage the CO social media accounts in line with corporate social media policy;
  • Upload information to knowledge management system on a regular basis, including news, updates, and resources.

Facilitate knowledge building and sharing

  • Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities;
  • Provide training and workshops on communication and advocacy for the UN Women Ukraine staff, as appropriate.

Required Skills and Experience

 

Education and certification:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism or relevant field is required
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

 

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of professional work experience at national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy;
  • Experience in media relations is an asset;
  • Experience in the use of social media.

 

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English and Ukrainian is required;
  • Working knowledge of the other UN official working language is an asset.
