Background

Corporate Background

UNDP works in about 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities and build resilience to sustain development results.

UNDP is working to strengthen new frameworks for development, disaster risk reduction and climate change. We support countries' efforts to achieve the new Sustainable Development Goals, which will guide global development priorities through 2030. The key 2030 Agenda principle of leaving no one behind and stamping out inequality is at the core of everything we do.

UNDP focuses on helping countries build and share solutions in three principal areas:

• Sustainable development

• Democratic governance and peacebuilding

• Climate and disaster resilience

In all our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and the empowerment of women, minorities and the poorest and most vulnerable.

UNDP established the Green Commodities Programme (GCP) in 2009 in recognition of the importance of global agricultural commodities and how they contribute to economic, social, and environmental sustainability and the need to strengthen UNDP’s support and leadership in the field. The programme supports governments to take the lead in creating national environments where sustainable commodity sectors can grow. It does so by:

• facilitating neutral spaces where stakeholders can collaborate on a shared vision and agenda for action

• building public-private partnerships

• sharing what we learn with other practitioners across geographies and commodities.

12 years on, the programme now called Food & Agricultural Commodity Systems Practise (FACS) works in

thirteen countries acting as a catalyst of systemic commodity sector changes in support of sustainable agriculture in eight commodities: cacao, palm oil, pineapple, coffee, cashmere, beef, soy as well as fisheries

FACS is coordinating the Good Growth Partnership (GGP) Program, an integrated “supply chain” approach to tackling the underlying root causes of deforestation from agriculture commodities, specifically beef, oil palm, and soy, which together account for 70% of deforestation globally. The GGP Program is delivered through a multi-agency consortium including WWF, IFC, UNEP, and CI. The Program provides support to production, generate responsible demand, support enabling transactions and foster adaptive management and learning through multiple child projects. With the pilot phase of the GGP Program ending in 2022, UNDP FACS and GGP partners are currently looking at conceptualizing and mobilizing resources for a next phase of the Partnership to further promote a sustainable transformation of the sector.

Following this same approach, the GEF has launched the Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Programme, consisting of projects in more than twenty-five countries, and a Global Platform (Knowledge-to-Action or K2A) which builds on GGP knowledge, expertise, and support. The FOLUR Impact Programme is led by the World Bank, and UNDP has a role at the global level to provide generic support through the global platform on building the capacity of Country Projects on multi-stakeholder collaboration, gender mainstreaming and private sector engagement and is leading in eight countries on project implementation.
