Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

As the G20 President for 2023, India has prioritised the growth narrative from ‘development of women’ to ‘women-led development’ (WLD), recognising women’s substantial and active contribution to global growth as well as enhancing the scope for their participation, leadership and decision-making. UN Women, in support of the Government of India’s framework of Women-led Development, is ‘profiling stories of Women’s Leadership’ in the country that has led to sustainable and transformative change. For this, UN Women is curating 75 Stories of Women’s Leadership this year and plans to disseminate networks to inspire and strengthen the voices of women-led development across platforms. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
