UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women’s China Office in Beijing supports and carries out work on (i) enhancing women's economic empowerment (WEE); (ii) ending violence against women (EVAW); (iii) innovative work to address gender issues in China (QWFIS);(iv) contributing to gender equality and women’s empowerment in China (CGF) and (v) using media to promote gender equality (Communication). In addition to the above, UN Women also actively participates and contributes to various UN inter-agency processes and collaborates with UN organizations around specific programme areas. 

From 2023, UN Women China office is working with a wide range of stakeholders in China to roll out the RESPECT framework for prevention of violence against women and girls. The programme is being implemented at national level with a pilot at provincial level, and entails community level interventions, social media campaigns, training, and capacity development for increasing awareness and understanding of RESPECT framework in the Chinese context.

Under the direct supervision of UN Women EVAW analyst and working with relevant programme and communication colleagues, the international intern for EVAW is supported to implement the tasks and activities outlined in the section below.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

Advocacy and knowledge management

  • Gain experience working in the field of communications and advocacy that directly relates to the rights of women and girls in context of prevention and response to violence against women
  • Assist to develop and implement communications and advocacy activities for the EVAW unit of UN Women China office
  • Assist to develop UN Women Partnership content updates and general maintenance of the EVAWG section of UN Women China office on the UN Women regional web site and contribute to knowledge management.
  • Assist to coordinate EVAWG social media stories and photos. Social media is a key part of the Communications Strategy, providing a platform for reaching a larger and more diverse audience.
  • Assist where practicable, with the development of publications, merchandise, advocacy materials and media outreach.
  • Develop personal communication skills with diverse audiences.
  • Support organizes campaigns, stories and content related to EVAW, including through interagency coordination mechanisms for 16 days of activism to end violence, etc.

Research and analysis:

  • Track and share latest research data and other information sharing, while honing personal research skills and awareness of legislation and programs to help EVAWG
  • Support development of concept notes, briefing materials, presentations on EVAWG related issues

Support programme implementation:

  • Support technically on development and review of programmatic documents, guidelines, standards, etc. as relevant including to seek and coordinate inputs from relevant experts at regional and HQ level
  • Assist in arranging meetings, receiving visitors, taking minutes, placing, and screening telephone calls, and responding to external requests for information.
  • Help to prepare procurement and programme related documents to request for Quotations, RFQs or RFPs, etc.
  • Provide administrative and technical support to UN Women organized events and workshops.
  • Assist to maintain filing system ensuring safekeeping of office documents.
    Assist in monitoring and reporting requirements by the office, including quarterly and annual reporting
  • Undertake other tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Functional Competencies:

Required Skills and Experience


  • University studies preferably in one of the following disciplines: sociology, law, women’s studies.  Candidates outside these fields may apply, provided they can justify in their cover letter and demonstrate competence in the technical test and/or interview.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);


  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);


  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation,


  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.


  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage, especially Chinese language.


  • Currently based in China (preferably Beijing) is preferred.


Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship. Applicants who are based within China (preferably Beijing) are preferred.
