Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnership Bureau provides the inter-governmental bodies with the timely, high quality and relevant substantive support and inputs they need for successful deliberations related to gender equality and the empowerment of women. This includes supporting the work of the main bodies of the UN (GA/ECOSOC/Security Council, Functional Committees etc), organizing and supporting the meetings of CSW and organizing and supporting the meetings of the UN Women Executive Board.

The Bureau also leads the efforts to develop and oversee the implementation of the strategy for UN Women’s role to “lead, coordinate and promote the accountability of the United Nations system in its work on gender equality and the empowerment of women” at Global, regional and Country level.

The Bureau leads the work to develop, and implement UN Women’s strategy for interaction with External Partners, including for advocacy, communications and for mobilization of support both in terms of political will, and financial resources, using effective partnerships with multi-lateral organizations and the staff work together in close collaboration with the staff in the rest of UNW. Civil society, as well as with the media and private sector.

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief (Advocacy and Communications), the incumbent of the post is responsible for the maintenance and update of the information content, technical aspects and development of the Women Watch inter-agency website portal, including set-up and development of new sections, multimedia and web 2.0 elements as well as selection of information items. She/he will support web strategy development to closer cross-link and integrate Women Watch with the UN Women website in order to reflect, through communications efforts, UN Women’s mandate to promote and coordinate efforts on gender equality across the UN system. She/he also coordinates with IANWGE, other UN entities web managers and UN Women communications section; supports the preparation of inter-agency guidelines; provides support to online discussions; and researches and writes news items and special features:

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance of the website (UN Women Watch)

  • Keep portal information up-to-date by posting gender-equality related United Nations news, events, documents, publications and multimedia provided by United Nations entities.
  • Verify and update the existing links in the Women Watch directory of resources.
  • Respond to user requests directed to UN Women Watch.
  • Monitor the UN Women Watch web traffic statistics using applications, such as Google Analytics.
  • Create and maintain a search-engine compliant sitemap and other measures for increased visibility of Women Watch in web search engines.
Update/Research (UN Women Watch)
  • Expand the directory of resources by posting new UN Women resources and adding new categories, as requeste.
  • Update the Women Watch RSS feed by posting new additions to Women Watch.
  • Create new Women Watch special thematic features by developing/designing web pages and converting documents into html/pdf formats, based on substantive input and content provided by United Nations entities.
  • Research materials and links to the UN Women online resources related to the theme of a special feature.
  • Update and expand special thematic features by posting new documents and linkages, and by archiving material as requested.
  • Promote new special thematic features on the Women Watch portal, including via banner graphics.
Content Development and Integration of Web 2.0 elements (e.g. online discussion and other user-generated content as well as multimedia elements)

  • Support web strategy development to closer integrate and cross-link Women Watch with UN Women corporate website.
  • Improve UN Women Watch interface design based on web accessibility guidelines and user feedback.
  • Prepare and add multilingual content for selected sections of Women Watch, including a multilingual navigational interface and multilingual page templates.
  • Upload translated data into the Women Watch database.
  • Integrate relevant content with UN Women corporate website. (on-going).
  • Maintain UN system-wide gender equality newsfeed (UNGEN) as a Women Watch online service, including social media and other online channels already established.
  • Coordinate preparation and set-up for online discussions hosted by UN Women Watch.
  • Publicize the online discussion as widely as possible on other websites and networks so as to maximize participation.
  • Monitor new and emerging web 2.0 technologies, including audiovisual elements, for applicability to UN Women Watch and for possible linkage to UN Women corporate site.
  • Research, write and produce web content packages on emerging issues reflecting a UN system wide perspective.
Liaise with IANGWE, UN system web managers and UN Women departments

  • Liaise with other UN entities web managers to share and gather relevant information related to gender equality and women's empowerment.
  • Liaise with IANWGE to service its public online information needs by posting documents and developing web pages as requested; liaise with UN Women.
  • Knowledge management team to service IANWGE's internal online collaboration.
  • Liaise with UN Women communications and other UN Women departments to coordinate and integrate relevant UN Women Watch content on the UN Women website.
  • Contribute to guidelines on Women Watch collaborative features to facilitate the collaborative workflow.
  • Contribute to meetings of the Women Watch Policy Advisory Committee and Inter-agency network on women and gender equality.
  • Contribute to drafting guidelines for Women Watch website posting procedures.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Master's degree (or equivalent) in one or more of the following disciplines: Online communications, Journalism, Information Technology and other related fields.
Experience:
  • At least two years of progressively responsible experience in a large international and/or corporate organization. Experience in the website/ IT required.

Language Requirements:

  • Written and oral proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of the other UN working knowledge is desirable.

Note:

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
