Background

UN Women (UNW), grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

UN Women plays an innovative and catalytic role in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) since its inception in 1997. UN Women oPt focuses its activities on one overarching goal, namely to support the implementation at the national level of existing international commitments to advance gender equality in line with the national priorities. In support of this goal, and thoroughly taking into consideration the specificities of the oPt context, UN Women concentrates its efforts and interventions toward the realization of following strategic goals: Engendering governance, peace and security; Supporting women's economic security and rights; and Promoting women’s rights and protection against violence.

UN Women actively participates in the implementation of the UN Trust Fund for Human Security funded joint project “Livelihood Protection and Sustainable Empowerment of Vulnerable, Rural and Refugee Communities in the Jordan Valley”, together with UNESCO, FAO and UNRWA and in coordination with UNSCO. One of the successes of the project is an effective partnership between UNWOMEN and UNESCO to construct women’s centers using traditional mud-brick technology. This component has promoted the resurrection of traditional architecture and construction skills, while fabricating affordable canters as the raw material is locally available in abundance. Through these centers, women have been empowered by participating in the construction process and now have centers for income generation and other activities which have great potential for future activities. It is also improving economic security by training semi-skilled laborers, while empowering women and ensuring local ownership of the centers by engaging them in the construction process.

Simultaneously, the project will facilitate the access of women’s centers products and services to the local and tourist markets. Establishment of kiosks on one of the main highways in the West Bank will enhance the marketing skills as well as generate income of the members of women’s centers who will sell homemade food produce as well as handicrafts. In addition, a traditional homemade food restaurant will be constructed in a touristic area and will improve women’s capacities in service provision to both local and foreign customers as well as generate income for both the employees and the women’s centers.

Within this framework, and in order to reflect the achievements of UN Women’s component of the joint project, UN Women will seek to contract a Consultant for the production and editing of a high quality video documentary and still photographs to be exhibited during the closing event of the project.
