Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, working in 177 countries and territories. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, UNDP is committed to helping the country through strengthened national and local capacities to carry out political, economic and social reforms and development. UNDP annually spends nearly USD 30 million in BIH through its four key focus areas: Justice and Security, Social Inclusion and Democratic Governance, Rural and Regional Development, and Energy and Environment. Additionally, UNDP is the custodian of the Resident Coordinator system, thereby collaborating closely with other UN Agencies.

Purpose

In order to ensure accurate translation from English to B/H/S and vice versa, UNDP requires qualified translators/interpreters for Banja Luka, Doboj, Mostar, Bihac, Tuzla, Brcko and Srebrenica.
The translator will report directly to the Communications Analyst.

Duties and Responsibilities

The translator will be responsible for:

Ensuring an accurate translation from English to B/H/S and vice-versa. Content accuracy includes detailed comparison of content, facts and figures and making sure there are no omissions from the source; accurate, exact and agreed upon translation of UN agencies and titles; accurate and consistent usage of the UN terminology adapted to B/H/S languages.
Ensuring B/H/S languages excellence, including excellent B/H/S languages vocabulary, syntax, expression and grammar as well as all relevant terminology.
Providing simultaneous interpretation from a booth to approved standards from B/H/S to English and vice versa. The translator will work under the guidance of UNDP BIH requesting officer.
Being responsible for consecutive translation at the meetings, conferences, workshops, seminars organized by UNDP. The translator will work under the guidance of UNDP BIH requesting officer.
Translator/Interpreter may be required to provide whispered or consecutive interpreting services outside plenary sessions as well as may occasionally be required to provide escort interpretation services in consecutive or whispered modes for dignitaries or experts.
The translator is obligated to work within the required deadlines and be available for comments and corrections.

Competencies

Ability to work to deadlines
General knowledge of UNDP and its work in BiH
Excellent linguistic skills
Ability to provide accurate, high quality interpretation services under pressure;
Ability to access reference material available on-site needed to carry out their interpretation duties;
Skillful use of specialized terminology;
Ability to handle working documents during the meeting while working in “sight translation” mode;
Ability to maintain good inter-personal relationships
Ability to establish priorities, plan, coordinate and monitor own work.

Required Skills and Experience

BA Degree in English language and literature and/or Court Interpreter Certificate for English language
Proven hands-on extensive experience; background knowledge and experience translating development work is highly preferable; prior experience translating for the United Nations or any of its agencies is an advantage.
Experience in using word processing and other computer applications.
Proficiency in English and B/H/S.
