Background

UN Women is the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.

 

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with government, civil society and other relevant actors.

 

In Nepal, UN Women is currently implementing its 2014-17 Strategic Note and Annual Work plan which incorporates several thematic areas, including economic empowerment, governance and leadership, ending violence against women and girls, and peace and security. Across all its work, UN Women has been working on governance, access to Justice, transitional justice, legal reforms activities on gender equality and omen’s empowerment perspectives.

 

A new portfolio of Governance and Leadership has been created in UN Women Nepal Country Office (NCO) in 2016 to support on governance, access to justice, transitional justice, legal reform. UN Women will also engage partners by leveraging the capacity of concerned stakeholders like justice sector actors, civil society, government institutions. The purpose of this internship is to provide support to legal reform, access to justice, transitional justice related activities of the NCO. The intern will receive overall supervision from Governance and leadership Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

UN Women Nepal is looking for a full-time intern to support Governance and Leadership unit activities in a variety of fields. Under the supervision of the Governance and Leadership Unit, the intern should take part in the following assignments:

  • Assist day to day work regarding access to justice, transitional justice and legal reforms;
  • Assist to review the proposed bills of gender responsive laws in line with the Constitution and international commitments;
  • Coordinate meetings with partners working on access to justice, transitional justice and legal reforms, draft meeting minutes, notes and reports as appropriate;
  • Update the activities agreed by implementing partners;
  • Undertake general administrative tasks such as supporting for making PowerPoint presentations, filing, documentation, scanning etc;
  • Support to draft the documents related to legal reforms, access to justice, transitional justice;
  • Support to prepare the activities reports of the implementing partner like National Women Commission(NWC), National Judicial Academy(NJA), Forum for Women, Law and Development(FWLD) etc. as per necessity;
  • Update exiting situation regarding legal reforms, access to justice, transitional justice.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • The intern will be provided with adequate learning opportunities and exposure to a wide range of the partners i.e. National Human Rights Institutions(NHRIs) including National Women Commission(NWC), justice sector actors, National Judicial Academy (NJA), concerns Ministries and departments of the Governments, transitional justice mechanism, civil society organizations working on access to justice, transitional justice, legal reform etc.;
  • The intern will be introduced to the larger range of partnership work and the various documents, regarding access to justice, transitional justice, legal reform documents prepared by the NCO, headquarters and the regional offices;
  • The Intern will also be provided with networking and broader learning opportunities various programs and learning seminars;
  • The Intern will have increased understanding of UN Women’s work and the UN system;
  • The Intern will learn to work as a team member in a multicultural setting.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • The intern must have studies in human rights, law, political science, related social sciences, or related discipline at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language

  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

UN Women Internship Policy

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or;
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.

Note:

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
