Background

Under the guidance and direct supervision of the UN Resident Coordinator (RC), the staff of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) strengthens capacity of the UN Country Team (UNCT), analyses political, social and economic trends and provides inputs to preparation of country programming products including the Common Country Assessment  (CCA) and United Nations Partnership Framework (UNPAF), supports the national strategies setting, provides assistance to development and implementation of the collaborative and joint programmes and monitors  progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Conferences, provides support to agencies without field representation to access national systems and for national counterparts to access the expertise of agencies without field representation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

The RCO Intern will support RCO Staff in ensuring successful implementation of UNCT activities. 

Major Tasks of the RCO Intern 

  • Support Effective Coordination and Analysis
  • Assist in coordination of all administration duties related to the UNCT and other Theme Group meetings and activities, including the preparation of the venue, minutes, set-up, invitations, follow-ups etc.
  • Liaise with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and the United Nations Communication Group (UNCG) in coordinating media attendance and support material for UN RC’s and Development Partners (DP) organized events and receptions
  • Organising weekly UNDP Brown Bag Talks as a discussion forum of current developmental topics for young employees in the UN System in Namibia
  • Providing secretarial and logistical support (e.g. procurement tasks, drafting minutes and read-outs, minding the reception)
  • Support facilitation of official visits of heads of non-resident agencies / programmes, other senior UN officials and consultants
  • Maintain and update the UNCT / RCO event calendar and UN mailing lists
  • In support of the UN Resident Coordinator and its staff, coordinate and arrange for all meetings with various donors, as and when required
  • Prepare all documents required for meetings and events (e.g. background documents, fact sheets, talking points, speeches)
  • On behalf of the UN RCO, provide assistance to the donor/multilateral section of the National Planning Commission (NPC) when seeking participation from donor partners
  • Be prepared to work under pressure and produce coordination products and other deliverables in a timely manner
  • Support UN Resident Coordinator Office Staff with any products needed in support of resource mobilization functions with donors
  • Be able to research information from the internet and other sources and summarize issues as instructed
  • Any other tasks as requested by the UN Coordination Analyst.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Student currently enrolled in the last year of a Bachelors' degree, or in a Master's degree or within one year after graduation from a master's degree or equivalent studies in Social Sciences, Development Studies, International Relations, Public Administration, Economics, Management Studies, or related fields. 

Experience:

  • Sound knowledge in computer skills (eg website creation), video skills are desirable.

Language:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

Required:

  • Candidates should submit, in addition to application, cv and letter of motivation.
  • Endorsement letter or letter of reference from a faculty member.

Conditions:

  • Any individual hired under these conditions are not staff and therefore, are not covered by UN Staff Regulations and Rules;
  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
