Background

Purpose of the Internship Programme:

Provide a framework for students from environment protection related academic backgrounds to be assigned to UNDP Office in Montenegro, Energy, Environment and Climate Change Cluster, where their theoretical knowledge can be put into force through practical work assignments;
Expose student to an international environment;
Expose students to the work of the Organization with an objective of deepening their knowledge and understanding of UN’s goals, principles and activities; and
Provide specific UNDP project with the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

Internships will allow successful candidates to have an opportunity to gain experience in a multi-cultural international organization.

As an EU candidate country, Montenegro is at the beginning of the process of developing its own MRV system. The First Biennial Update Report (FBUR) introduced this topic and the forthcoming obligations to various national stakeholders, proposing institutional arrangements for national MRV system in Montenegro, specifying five major steps in order to establish the system. The Second BUR went further and discussed the viable national MRV model with all relevant partners/institutions. Consequently, conceptual framework for the national MRV system has been proposed, including roles and responsibilities of all relevant national institutions, including decision and policy makers, technical experts, data providers etc. In addition, data flow relevant for climate change reporting (both national and international) has been defined and presented.
The development of the domestic monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system, including the developed guidelines, considering national circumstances and capabilities, taking into account the different nature of the mitigation actions has been provided.
The SBUR reported on the assessment made of existing arrangements for domestic MRV and indicated ways for improvement for organizational and institutional arrangements, cross-sectoral approaches, technical and institutional capacity-building needs. Furthermore, it described support provided to the process of development of the national institutional arrangement and framework for domestic MRV, and progress of implementation of such institutional arrangements and framework.
All of the above has been captured at the MRV Portal, an on-line tool where all relevant information on stakeholders, mitigation and adaptation actions, data sets, improvement plans etc has been stored.

Duties and Responsibilities

In order to make the MRV portal operational and useful, it is necessary to update it with relevant information on various projects, mitigation actions, adaptation actions, challenges, wider impacts etc, as per the portal structure. Thus, the intern would be in charge of collecting and entering the information into the portal. Under the guidance and primary supervision of the UNDP programme Manager for NCs and BURs , the Intern will be expected to carry out the following core responsibilities:

Keep close communication with the Directorate for Climate Change, in order to obtain all relevant up-to-date information;
Contact relevant institutions to collect any possible information needed for the portal when needed;
Enter all collected information into the portal, as per the portal structure;
Use the developed template for data gathering;
Update the portal regularly with relevant information;
Collect existing data on on-going projects, mitigation and adaptation actions;
Support mapping of adaptations interventions ongoing in the region of WB;
Support mapping of adaptation actions relevant and applicable for Montenegro.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Student or recent graduate of environment related sciences: biology, environment, ecology, energy, sustainable development and similar (only current students and graduates who can start the internship within one-year of graduation will be taken into consideration).

Experience:

Experience in data gathering and compiling;
Previous experience in climate change/environment protection projects will be an asset.

Languages:

Excellent knowledge of local and English language, written and spoken.

Other:

Excellent computer skills. .

Duration of Internship Assignments:

Internship assignments vary in length according to the availability and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UNDP. However, they will normally last no less than six weeks and no more than six months. If an intern can prove that a nine-month internship will grant him/her an educational credit for one full school year, the internship may be exceptionally granted for a maximum total duration of nine months.
Internship assignments are available on a part-time and full-time basis throughout the year, depending on the availability of meaningful assignments and the needs and capacity of offices to receive and supervise interns.
Internship assignments are unpaid.
