Background

Launched in 2008, the Business Call to Action (BCtA) is a unique multilateral alliance between key donor governments including the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), UK Department for International Development, and the United Nations Development Programme - which hosts the secretariat. BCtA aims to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by challenging and supporting companies to develop inclusive business (IB) models that offer the potential for both commercial success and development impact. BCtA aims to enhance the visibility, credibility, scale and effectiveness of inclusive businesses as market-based solutions to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs and benefit those at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP).

BCtA's value proposition is to drive the inclusive business agenda globally by engaging private sector, governments and development community in joint efforts towards inclusive economic growth and social impact. BCtA members are market leaders and innovators, committed to developing commercially viable business ventures that engage people living at the BoP as consumers, producers, suppliers, and distributors of goods and services. Worldwide, over 200 companies have responded to BCtA by making commitments to improve the lives and livelihoods of millions through commercially-viable business ventures.

In the region, UNDP works with national and international partners to strengthen the social contract between the state and society in a manner that protects human rights, promotes equality, and enhances social cohesion. Sustainable Development Goal 16 frames the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provision of access to justice for all, and the building of effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels as a priority for the 2030 development agenda. UNDP’s Strategic Plan (2018-2021) prioritizes democratic governance and peacebuilding as the key to strengthening the social contract between the people and the state in realizing resilient and sustainable development. To contribute to this overall goal, the Governance and Peacebuilding Cluster in UNDP ECA works regionally and at country level on:

 Advocating for openness, transparency and accountability of public institutions, anti-corruption and strengthening civil society engagement;

Strengthening the rule of law including community security and promoting rights and access to justice of marginalized communities;

Enhancing public services and institutional responsiveness including public sector performance measures, voice and participation, particularly of excluded groups including youth;

Supporting effective local governance frameworks, decentralization and implementation mechanisms;

Supporting conflict prevention through national dialogue, local peace committees, and confidence-building activities while building institutional capacity to address risks and crises;

Placing gender equality and women at the center of decision-making and peace efforts.
