Background

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global anti-poverty network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in over 170 countries and territories, working with them on their own solutions to globa, regional,l and national development challenges.

The Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS) in New York, which leads UNDP’s work across the Arab Region, is seeking an intern with an interest in addressing global climate and environmental issues in collaboration with various partners. Finding solutions to climate and environmental issues is a vital element in attaining SDGs while preventing conflicts and pursing stabilities in the region.  RBAS has been engaging in the promotion of inclusive and sustainable growth in the Arab States region together with the UNDP Global Policy Network (GPN), which is in charge of UNDP’s corporate responsibility for developing all relevant policies and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan.

To this end, the intern works as part of the RBAS Partnership Unit, in coordination with all relevant units in the Bureau, in supporting COs to explore partnerships with governments, the private sector, and different stakeholders including donors and funds with the focus on climate and environment issue as well as in broadening the networks to seek further partnership opportunities with other UN agencies, organizations, institutions and NGOs for the improvement of environmental conditions and sustainable development in the Arab region.

The internship is intended to facilitate the following knowledge/ learning: 

  • Means of identifying entities, including financial/academic institutes and private companies, engaging in climate financing
  • Ways to categorize the entities s/he identifies and link to development results planned under RBAS country programmes
  • Challenges in addressing environmental priorities in the fragile and crisis contexts of the Middle East
  • Ways to use digital platforms to increase visibility on environment related projects being implemented in the Arab States region  

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Regional Bureau’s Partnership Unit with financial modeling and analytical support for project financing, climate risk, resilience and associated financial structures;
  • Conduct research on the topic of climate finance to facilitate sustainable development and related investment, in support of the UN member states across the Arab States Region;
  • Support the compilation of lessons learnt on climate change, energy and environment for RBAS
  • Support the preparation of case studies, reports, presentations, articles, and blogs, including research and writing and PowerPoint; ·
  • Support in improving media relations through developing communication tools (e.g. presentation materials, infographic and brochures) to communicate impact and development results of programmes and projects;
  • Other related tasks.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) such as environmental economics, development economics, climate science, environmental law, business management regarding environment and other relevant areas;
  • Or be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) such as environmental economics, development economics, climate science, environmental law, business management regarding environment and other relevant areas;
  • Or have graduated with a university degree such as environmental economics, development economics, climate science, environmental law, business management regarding environment and other relevant areas, if selected, must start with the internship within one-year of graduation

Experience:

  • Network, liaison and collaboration experience
  • Experience in editing images or preparing graphics for the web and email communications a plus.
  • Experience in environment related work/ activities
  • Experience in research in environment related areas
  • Familiarity with UNDP’s work on environment and biodiversity is desirable

Language requirements:

  • Fluency in English-- written and spoken-- is required. Proficiency in French or Arabic an asset.
