Background

The 2016 Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review (QCPR) provides a new global framework to guide effective operationalization of UN presence at the country level. The QCPR emphasis on strengthening the linkages between development, humanitarian and peace, national ownership and leadership by building on existing efforts, using the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (in Burundi the UN Nations Assistance Plan) 2019 to 2023.

The Government of Burundi in 2018 developed a new National Development Plan from 2019 to 2023. In parallel, the One UN Burundi has developed the next UNDAF from 2019 to 2023 to articulate One UN’s strategic and operation support to the NDP and national priorities. The role of the One UN in Burundi is becoming increasingly important, and the One UN and its Partners consider the United Nations Country Team to be a key strategic partner and playing a vital role in supporting Burundi’s national priorities.

In response to the UNDAF and the UN reform, the Resident Coordinator Office has reorganized its structure to fully meet the expectations of the UN reform and related needs. Some capacities are still to be covered for a fully functionality. It is in that context that the UN RC Office is seeking to recruit an intern for six months who will support administrative and financial in the RCO. Under the direct supervision of the Head of RCO and the RC, the incumbent will support the following tasks as below. This is an opportunity for an under graduate seeking a short-term work experience in an international organization. The RCO does not pay allowance for this role.  
 

Duties and Responsibilities

Shadow and Support RCO staff in:

  • Initiation of payments, preparation of support documents and follow up with UNDP Finance Unit
  • Budget management and reporting
  • Supply chain and management of office furniture
  • Coordination with UNDP Procurement Unit in RCO inventories and follow up of equipment maintenance;
  • Preparation of RCO staff mission;
  • Leave monitor of RCO staff absence;
  • Intérim of RC Assistant ;
  • General coordination functions.

Impact of Results

The impact of the above results will be support to the effective functioning of the RCO and a training opportunity for an under graduate student in administrative and finance management.

Required Skills and Experience

 

Education:

 Under graduate student in Administration, Financial Management

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.

Experience:

  •  No experience required

Language Requirements:

  •  Fluency in French is required, and English is an advantage.

Conditions of the Internship:

Interns shall:

  • Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of UNDP notwithstanding their status as described in paragraph 6 of this policy;
  • Provide the receiving office with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. UNDP shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regards to material that bears a direct relation to, or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of UNDP, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to UNDP in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law;
  • Respect the impartiality and independence required of the United Nations and of the receiving office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to UNDP;
  • (Unless otherwise authorized by the receiving office, they may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external party any information that has become known to them by any reason of their association with the United Nations, UNDP or the receiving office, that they know or ought to have known has not been made public. They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the receiving office, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligation also apply after the end of the internship with UNDP.
  • Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the United Nations, UNDP, or the receiving office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations or UNDP; (f) Comply with local laws and customs.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP.

There is no expectation of employment with UNDP following an internship.
