Background

One of the programme priorities of UN Women for Ethiopia is Ending Violence against Women and Girls (EVAWG). In this area, UN Women works with key partners from government and civil society to strengthen favorable social norms, attitudes and behaviors at community and individual levels and prevent VAWG.

UN Women works closely with Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to prevent and respond to violence against women and harmful traditional practices as part of its “Preventing and Responding to Violence against Women and girls Programme (VAWG)”. To this effect, with aim of creating a zero-tolerant community that promotes and protects the rights of women and does not tolerate violence, MoWCA intends to build the capacity of community-based structures. In 2016 through UN Women’s strong technical and financial support, MoWCA has provided an intensive training for about 160 leaders and members of women development groups (WDGs) from the regions of Oromia, Tigray, Amhara, and Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples, and from Addis Ababa and DD city administrations in Adama, Oromia from 24-26 October 2016. The intensive three-day training resulted in enhancing the awareness and knowledge of women on legal framework on women’s rights, Gender and VAWGs and HTPs, methods of preventing HTPs and VAWG including response in their groups and communities, provision of timely support to survivors of HTPs and violence including reporting.

Building on the momentum and commitment that have been made on the first phase training and recognizing that working with the existing grass root structure of WDGs has pivotal value to reach the majority of community to effectively address VAW including HTPs UN Women in partnership with MoWCA undertake the second phase training for WDG members targeting five regional states (Tigray, Amhara, SNNP – Particularly South Omo and West SNNP; Harari and Oromia) based on 2016 EDHS report on the prevalence of Violence and HTP’s.

Based on the consensus reached in the aforementioned trainings, to enrich and frame the training to be guided by standard manual, UN Women supported the development of a standardized training manual for WDG’s training facilitators to increase knowledge and skills of members and leaders of Women Development Group and community level women organization representatives to address VAWG and HTPs in their communities
