Background

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN Women), grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.
The work of UN Women Ethiopia Country Office (ECO) is guided by its 2017-2020 Strategic Note and other UN joint commitments that support the Government’s five-year Growth and Transformation plan (2010/11-2014/15). The strategic approach and work plan include UN Women ECO's core principles in leading and promoting coherence within UN system work and supporting regional initiatives given the presence of UN ECA and African Union in Ethiopia. The Country Programme Division under the leadership of the Deputy Country Representative manages the Programme support to Ethiopia in partnership with Government of Ethiopia, regional governments, donors, UN agencies and CSOs to enhance gender equality and empowerment of women in Ethiopia. In its work, UN Women ECO is focusing on four main development result areas: 1) Women supported to lead and participate in decision-making at all levels; 2) Women, especially the poorest and most excluded, are economically empowered and benefit from development; 3) Women and girls live a life free from violence; and 4) Governance and national planning fully reflect accountability for gender equality commitments and priorities.
Anticipating an increased focus on gender and protection in humanitarian settings, UN Women ECO in 2018 started intensifying its engagement with the humanitarian community present in Ethiopia to ensure that initiatives implemented in the country are gender responsive. UN Women ECO in its health and gender programme works with the UN H6 partnership and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) where Gender, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and HIV are addressed through joint programmes.
Health is one of the priority protections needs of women and girls, especially during humanitarian crises. Addressing the barriers that prevent women and girls from demanding the realization of their health rights, including to information and services, is critical. Efforts to strengthen the ‘demand’ side of health needs, along with the ‘supply’ side of health services, UN Women has already positioned itself to work with other UN agencies and stakeholders to ensure addressing the ‘demand’ side by focusing on women’s access and rights to health services and leverage the added value to UN Women.
To implement its programmes, UN Women is seeking to hire a Gender and Public Health Officer to strengthen delivery of its Health and Gender programme and contribute, among other, to the overall joint H6 partnership. While the position is based in Addis Ababa, the role encompasses travel requirements to the intervention regions of Ethiopia. Under the direct supervision of the EVAWG progamme specialist, the Gender and Health Officer works closely with the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) team members and all UN Women Ethiopia colleagues.
