Background

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the UN, UN Women works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women Ethiopia Country Office (ECO) is thus dedicated to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment. This is done through national programming that (1) supports women’s leadership and participation to benefit equally from governance systems, (2) encourages gender responsive governance and budgeting, (3) women and girls living a life free from violence,  (4) contributes to the empowerment including economic autonomy, and (5) building sustainable peace and resilience, and benefit equally from the prevention of natural disasters and conflicts and humanitarian action. Furthermore, UN Women ECO works closely with national governments and local authorities, UN Agencies and non-governmental organizations in designing laws, policies, programmes and provision of services in addition to ensuring that human rights and gender equality standards are effectively implemented. As such, the objective of UN Women ECO is to make certain that women and girls are fully able to benefit from their fundamental human rights and access resources and services.

Reflective of its strategic priorities, UN Women ECO aims to disseminate high quality and well-developed knowledge products generated under its various thematic areas. This is expected to enable it to effectively engage with stakeholders and establish strong partnership with its donors. To ensure the production of quality reports/content in a timely manner, UN Women ECO is thus seeking to recruit an editor with expertise in editing reports, development of policy briefs and documents for publication to donors as well as public audiences and women’s human rights is needed. The consultant will support UN Women ECO under a retainer contract based on demand.

Duties and Responsibilities

OBJECTIVE OF THE CONSULTANCY 

The main objective of this consultancy is the production of error free and readable publications through editing, drafting and reviewing of results based contents.

 

SCOPE OF THE WORK

Under the direct supervision and overall guidance of the Deputy  Representative, with support from Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst and in close coordination with Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) team, the consultant will:

  • Review, understand and internalize the materials/contents and if needed draft contents from reliable source
  • Use grammatically correct language and spellings
  • Revise draft  policy briefs based on the mother documents/research reports, policy dialogue outcome statements  and  contents produced by consultants, partners and UN Women
  • Ensure reliability and timeliness of information and its source including facts and figures, in all narrative sections and annexes
  • Ensure a consistent style and format throughout the documents by consideration of page numbers limits and relevance
  • Appropriate positioning and numbering of boxes, figures and tables
  • Consistent font (s) – as relevant to headings and text
  • Appropriate use of italicized and bolded words
  • Ensure all footnotes, sources, references are complete and consistent
  • Apply UN Women’s branding and publications guidelines as well as relevant publications templates when needed
  • Thorough review of annexes (people consulted, bibliography, etc) to highlight incomplete areas along with consistency in presentation as per UN Women publication guidelines
  • Organize and review table of contents and Acronym List
  • Provide timely work on progress documents/publications to relevant/focal UN Women Ethiopia Country Office staff for their feedbacks.

 

EXPECTED OUTPUTS AND DELIVERABLES  

Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Representative with support from Communications and Knowledge Management Specialist, Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst and WEE team the consultant is expected to provide:

 

  • Print ready edited contents on, policy briefs, events briefs, research documents, periodical reports, manuals, promotional leaflets and related as per specific assignments.

 

Obligation of UN Women and the Consultant   

 

  • The consultant should make sure that any printed materials utilized to be referenced and returned.
  • UN Women ECO will provide copies of all relevant documentation in electronic copies to the consultant.
  • The consultant shall not either during the term or after termination of the assignment, disclose any proprietary or confidential information related to the consultancy service.  Proprietary interests on all materials and documents prepared by the consultant under the assignment shall become and remain properties of UN Women.
  • In case of any error or omission in the contracted work, it shall be the responsibility of the consultant to carry out the service to the satisfaction of UN women.

 

TIME FRAME AND DURATION OF CONSULTANCY

The consultant will be engaged under a retainer contract, which facilitates direct engagement of the consultant depending on need and availability within the contract period for a pre-agreed fee. The retainer contract is expected to run from September 2020 to August 2021  (Maximum 60 days of assignment during one year contract period). UN Women does not have the obligation to warrant that the consultant works for the maximum days.

Required Skills and Experience

Academic qualifications

  • A degree preferable MA in English Literature or in a related field;
  • Native English speaking and writing professional editor;
  •  Strong writing and presentation skills;
  • Minimum of 10 years proven experience in professional writing and editing work at international level;
  • Knowledge and understanding of gender, development and women economic empowerment Programs /interventions;
  •  Progressive relevant professional work experience in undertaking researches, project management (project implementation, monitoring and evaluation) in areas of gender and women’s economic empowerment;
  •  Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the social, cultural and political context of Ethiopia and women’s economic/livelihood situation and work in the country will be an asset;
  • Excellent analytical skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills and capacity to liaise with parties concerned.
